Weekend Recommendations: Books & CDs

Each weekend, Needcoffee.com’s staff of whackos will wrack our brains to give you interesting and new things to do over the weekend. Books, movies, whatever. We’ll throw them out, you do with them what you will. And hey…if you have something you want to recommend–whatever it is–drop us a line.

Incidentally, we’ve provided links where we can for you to buy the stuff or find out more if you’re interested, courtesy of those Amazon types.

Hey, come on, we can’t be totally selfless in this, can we? Okay, books and music first…

Audiobook of the Week: Something Wicked This Way Comes by Ray Bradbury, performed by Stefan Rudnicki. You might remember Jonathan Pryce as Mr. Dark in the decent Disney movie adaptation. However, get acquainted with the source material if you haven’t already. It’s the perfect weekend to do so, after all. This Blackstone Audio release not only comes unabridged but has a sweet bonus: the short story “A Sound of Thunder,” the adaptation of which was recently ignored at the box office. Again, go back to the source and enjoy. (Buy it)

Art Book of the Week: Deco LAndmarks: Art Deco Gems of Los Angeles by Arnold Schwartzman. During the 1920s and 30s, art deco was the architectural style of choice. Apparently there’s a great deal of the good stuff over in Los Angeles, and that’s the focus of the book, with scads of photos. Which is good, because I’m sure it’ll all be replaced by Starbucks. Which, you know, is a rough call. This release hits from Chronicle Books. (Buy it)

Movie Book of the Week: Book of the Dead: The Complete History of Zombie Cinema by Jamie Russell. Ah yes, considering that this weekend is being spent watching a lot of movies with the word “Dead” in the title, it’s good to have a bigass reference book to guide us through. And this release from FAB Press out of the UK arrived just in time. It goes from the beginning all the way to the latest, like Land of the Dead. There’s craploads of photos, posters and the most complete zombie filmography I’ve ever seen. Like zombies? You must own this. (Buy it)

Magazine of the Week: Alter Ego #53. TwoMorrows hits with this year’s Halloween issue of Alter Ego, and they’re always a blast–this one is no exception. They cover thirty years in the unlife of Dracula in comics, plus an eleven-page Halloween art section featuring Bernie Wrightson, Steve Ditko, Steve Bissette, Michael Kaluta and more. If you dig comics and monsters, grab this one–and check that sweet new Dracula cover artwork by Dick Giordano. Nice. (Buy it)

CD of the Week: Ça Ira by Roger Waters. The idea of opera and Roger Waters isn’t that terrifying. Really, if you think about it, the raw emotion of The Wall is pretty operatic in nature. But when you get down to brass tacks, of course, it’s not an opera in the true sense of the word. This release from Sony Classical, however, is. This piece is based on the French Revolution and comes with the full nine, including opera veterans to blast out the parts. Floyd fans should definitely check it out…but remember, it’s opera. (Buy it)
