Happy Birthday, H. P. Lovecraft

Lovecraft smiling

H.P. Lovecraft is 117 years young today. To celebrate, here’s a bunch of Lovecraft-related goodies. First up, let’s listen to The Neil give his thoughts on Howard. I think he speaks for a goodly number of us:

Update: I believe the previous bit, which was taken down a while back, can be found in its complete docu form here on Dailymotion. I’m not embedding it here because I can’t seem to make the damn thing not autoplay, and autoplaying videos make me want to punch kittens. So this is a nice compromise.

We agree with The Neil’s assessment. Lovecraft’s beasties are supposed to be indescribable, so visual media dealing with the mythos are at a distinct disadvantage. However, one film we think stands above all others. The trailer and more fun after the jump:

That is, of course, the Chazzie-award winning Call of Cthulhu film, created by the H.P. Lovecraft Historical Society. (And holy crap, I just checked their website: is this the best coffee mug you’ve seen all year, or what?)

Anyway, you can snag the DVD of Call of Cthulhu here. You’ll be glad you did.

We would also encourage you to check out The Darkest of the Hillside Thickets, whose Lovecraft-inspired music we’ve mentioned previously.

You’d think we could find a video of their stuff online or something. Wait! From the mid-90s, and off the Great Old Ones album, it’s the home-grown “Color Me Green”!

And, of course, how could we have any post about Lovecraft without mentioning Calls for Cthulhu. We love ya, ya big green puppet menace to mankind.

Lastly, here’s a round-up of some of the lovely Lovecraft bits we’ve posted before:
