Miyazaki’s “Little Nemo”: A Taste of the Movie That Never Was

Little Nemo Miyazaki

Cartoon Brew has posted test footage from a planned Isao Takahata/Hayao Miyazaki American/Japanese joint production of Winsor McCay’s Little Nemo: Adventures in Slumberland that sadly never happened. They also tell us

George Lucas, Chuck Jones, Gary Kurtz, Ray Bradbury, Chris Columbus, Moebius, John Canemaker, Leo Salkin, Paul Julian, Ken Anderson and Frank Thomas were attached to this film at one time or another. Bill Hurtz (George of the Jungle, Unicorn In The Garden) and Masami Hata (Sea Prince and the Fire Child) ultimately directed the final release, admittedly a mixed bag.

Here’s the vid. Damn shame. This would have been amazing. More after the break.

This is the short film, from 1911, entitled “Winsor McCay, the Famous Cartoonist of the N.Y. Herald and His Moving Comics,” in which he apparently has an idea to making his comic characters move, and undertakes the effort to do so within a month’s time. Shows the end result as well.
