Haagen-Dazs Reserve: Fleur de Sel Caramel – Review

Haagen-Dazs Reserve: Fleur de Sel Caramel ice cream

The thing about Haagen-Dazs is that they do not screw around. Their regular flavors are evil enough, but when you start getting into their Reserve line, that’s when it gets evil and creative. Take for instance this flavor–their latest Reserve variation.

Now: fleur de sel. You might think to yourself: is that the Beethoven piece I learned to play on piano when I was eight or is that French girl from the Harry Potter series? It’s neither. It means “flower of salt” and fleur de sel caramels, which are slighty salty and very sweet caramels, are coated in chocolate and slapped into this concoction. The rest of the stuff is caramel ice cream with caramel ribbons and a bit of French sea salt. So scads of caramel, a bit of chocolate and just a touch of extra salt.

And it tastes just like it sounds. The caramel trifecta is rich as hell, the chocolate is a nice way to ground the sweetness and the salt is just enough to give it a little mild zing. I can’t eat more than a few spoonfuls of this thing, because it’s a like a sugary sweet rocket cocktail. In other words, it is damn good. Almost ludicrously so, like caramel ice cream where the dials go to eleven. Highly recommended.

  • Actually, this is probably safer. For me, anyway. Either a few spoonfuls of this or an entire brand bucket. I’m probably losing weight as a result. The Haagen-Dazs diet! Brilliant!

  • Oh goodness…this stuff is so amazing. It’s $4.79 per pint at my local grocery, but I simply had to try it. I had some of the Acai Sorbet last week, and this week I caved and bought a pint of the Fleur de Sel. I’m a fan of their Dulce de Leche anyway, but the FDS is just caramel superlative. Unbelievably good.

  • OMG! I studied abroad in La Rochelle, France, where all the best salt fields are, they had Caramel Fleur de Sel ice cream at this shop called Earnest’s, I DREAM of this stuff, I’l elated Haagen-Dazs took a stab at making it, i’m grabbing my keys and I’m off to the grocery store!

  • This is ice cream is entirely OUT OF CONTROL it’s the best ice cream i ever had i’m not kidding and if they really do stop making it i think i will really just die or something…i’m going to have to fight someone for the recipe. It’s that good.

  • Linnea: Well, that was my point…if the NY Times is correct that it’s a traditional thing from Brittany, then they stole it from her using a time machine…unless their traditions only go back about 20 years…

  • Who are you, Linnea? That’s the name of my daughter who never ate anything but peanut butter, apples, yogurt, and carrots til she was a teenager. Surely she hasn’t discovered fleur de sel!
