  • The Banana Splits are back. With short films, music videos, DVDs, CDs, and live performances at Banana Splitsville, a new part of Hard Rock Park in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. They are going to be on Cartoon Network, both the channel and the website. Their new album is called Go Bananas Your Way. All four Splits, Bingo, Drooper, Fleegle and Snorky are returning. Floobus, the Pete Best of the group and “Fifth Split,” will be featured on an upcoming episode of VH1: Behind the Music. Source: Variety.

  • HBO is putting out The Sopranos: The Complete Series. 86 episodes, remastered on 28 discs, plus two bonus discs and three discs worth of soundtrack. Asking price on Amazon right now is $280. And of course, 3.5 hours of bonus stuff is “never-before-seen,” so if you bought all the season boxed sets…I know you’re probably using some profanity at the moment. I know you’re going to want to know what’s in that 3.5 hours, and here’s what the release says…

    Supper with The Sopranos, two sit-down dinners with cast and crew full of insider trivia like what was the one condition Stevie Van Zandt made in order to play Silvio and what did Edie Falco as Carmella forget to wear during the final diner scene; as well as a separate, exclusive two-part interview of creator David Chase by actor Alec Baldwin (a huge fan who tried to get Chase to cast him in an episode) where Chase shares his personal views including his first impression of James Gandolfini during his audition and who was his inspiration for Lidia in the show.

  • A Bill Hicks biopic starring Russell Crowe? Innn-teresting.
  • I neglected to mention this originally, but Iron Man hits DVD and Blu-Ray on October 30th. You can pre-order regular flavor here and Blu-Ray flavor here.

  • Are you ready for Toxic Avenger 5? Lloyd Kaufman told Fangoria that our hero Toxie has gotten older: “Now he’ll have to deal with his wife’s menopause, his erectile dysfunction–which is a constant erection–and his rebellious kid.” Sounds like a trio of villains that would give any comic book hero pause.   • Voltron is certainly kicking around a lot for a film that’s been put into turnaround. Variety says that’s the condition its condition is in at Fox and New Regency, but Relativity Media is in talks to back it for less money. They want to do a more 300 or Sin City-based FX thing so it won’t take some godawful amount of money. And if you think about it, that sort of stylized hyper-real look would probably work for this project even better than most. Producers want to get a helmer on board this week, and Justin Marks’ script is still on board as well. Marks apparently also scribed He-Man, Hack/Slash and the Chun-Li Street Fighter movie that are all in various stages of something. Oh, but this is interesting: “Marks’ take is described as a post-apocalyptic tale set in New York City and Mexico, where five survivors of an alien attack band together and end up piloting the five lion-shaped robots that combine and form the massive sword-wielding Voltron that helps battle Earth’s invaders.” Which would make this “Voltron of the WTF Universe,” I guess.

  • Warner Brothers has a bunch of announcements. Austin Powers is hitting Blu-Ray with all three films in the “Shagadelic Edition, Loaded With Extra Mojo.” They’re only available as a set–and I can’t tell if there’s anything new on the discs–the release is unclear. That’s out December 2nd…no pre-order available yet.

    There’s a 300 Limited Collector’s Edition that has the two discs from the previous special edition, plus it…

    adds a bonus disc containing a new documentary To The Hot Gates: A Legend Retold, a comprehensive and dynamic description of the process filmmakers followed to take an ancient legend through a graphic novel and finally realizing it as a feature film. In addition there is a bonus Digital Copy of the film, a 52-page hardcover art book with a personal message from Snyder, a lucite display with motion film image and six collectible photo cards.

    No pre-order yet. There’s also the Casablanca Ultimate Collector’s Edition, in DVD and Blu-Ray flavors:

    The premium giftset is elegantly boxed in an intricate laser-cut Moroccan design and will include such collectibles as replicas of actual props (Victor Laszlo’s “Letter of Transit”) as well as a number of Warner studio documents (an executive’s letter commanding a new PR image for Bogart from gangster to romantic lead; a note from producer Hal Wallis re-titling the film to Casablanca; and a memo from Wallis to Jack Warner strongly urging casting Bogart over George Raft). The DVD set will also contain a branded passport holder, luggage tag, photo book and a mail-in offer for a reproduction of the original movie poster.

    No pre-order here yet, either. Stay tuned. Also, The Polar Express, the most terrifying Christmas zombie film ever, will be presented in 3-D on regular DVD and Blu-Ray on October 28th, just in time for Halloween.

  • Fox is trying to stop Watchmen from getting released, saying that they never gave up their rights to make the film. Eventually there will be money involved, so you don’t really need to know anything beyond that. Details here if you want them.
