My Advice: Don’t Bother

Poor Donna Murphy (Graham). The one time she decides to have a little fun, she ends up in a stolen car with the typical 1950’s leather jacket wearing “rebel” Vince (LeBlanc). Of course, when they run over someone, he bolts and she’s left holding the bag. So she gets sent up the river to the McCarthy Reform School for Wayward Girls. She has to deal with a bitter manipulative warden (Seymour), a therapist who wants to get in touch with more than Donna’s feelings, and experimenting with the love that dare not speak its name. But Donna has to raise above all this. She has to save her little sister from the dangers of Vince and the pervy hands of their uncle, In exchange for her help, the warden wants, nay demands that Donna must… win a track meet.

[ad#longpost]You expect a few things from a ‘women in prison’ exploitation film. Lots of sexual torture and girl-on-girl action to titillate the men, it’s called ‘exploitation’ for a reason. But the heroine of the piece triumphs in the end to keep the movie from being completely reprehensible. Classic examples of the genre are very politically incorrect but still can be enjoyable as camp. But Reform School Girl is too PC. Its fangs have been removed and it is about as weak as the pills Mother gives you that don’t do anything at all.

A perfect example is the climax of the movie. Usually with this type of film, there is a massive riot and plenty of people get killed or beaten up. This one ends at a track meet. How sad is that? The closest this film gets to a riot is a food fight. The actors play it far too earnestly and are far too pretty to be in juvenile detention. No one looks that pretty incarcerated in a correctional faculty. Sleazy yes, but not pretty. The only lesbian sex scene is all tenderness and pretty music. It should be an explosion of released sexual energy, not the damp slop you get from a chick flick. Reform School Girl completely misses the point. It’s should be about sleazy fun, over the top acting, and naughty girls touching each other. Since it isn’t and there are no special features for possible enticement, don’t bother.
