Stuff: Gaiman Takes the Newbery

Neil Gaiman with friend
Crowley and Aziraphale?

  • Neil Gaiman‘s The Graveyard Book won the Newbery Medal. And he managed not to swear in amazement and delight at the librarians and teachers who broke the news. Read the story here. Couldn’t have happened to a nicer guy.
  • A new Bonnie and Clyde? Apparently so. Hilary Duff and Kevin Zegers (Dawn of the Dead remake) are set to star. Not a remake of the 1967 film, but a brand new take. I never did catch War, Inc., but I understand Duff broke away from her good girl image so maybe this shouldn’t be immediately dismissed. But then again, I understand erotic dancing with a live scorpion will do that for you. Source.

  • Atkinson’s doing Oliver! and now Lenny Henry is doing Othello. Anyone who doesn’t think this is cool please raise your hand so you can be slapped. Shows starts at the West Yorkshire Playhouse in Leeds on February 14. Source.

  • As one of the five people on the planet who appear to recognize The Hudsucker Proxy for the genius it is, I raise an intrigued eyebrow to the musical version. It’s coming to the La Jolla Playhouse for their 2009-10 season. It’s quite obvious that the Law of Relative Development should be amended to account for the adapting of films to the stage. Source.
  • Tintin is a go. It’s called The Adventures of Tintin: Secret of the Unicorn. Spielberg is directing. Jamie Bell is Tintin. Daniel Craig is Red Rackham. The aforementioned Pegg and Frost are on board along with Andy Serkis and Toby Jones (Dobby the House Elf’s voice). Joe Cornish, Steven Moffat and Edgar Wright scribed it. Film hits cinemas in 2011. The followup will indeed by helmed by Peter Jackson.
  • Ugly Betty has been pulled from the ABC schedule and will return at some point in the future. I share Michael Ausiello from EW’s confusion: “Now, granted, Betty hasn’t exactly been killing it in the ratings this season, but it’s still one of ABC’s signature shows. At least I thought it was.

  • V, which we previously mentioned was being reworked, has gotten a pilot ordered for ABC. So has Witches of Eastwick, which we also mentioned before was in the works. Again, Michael Ironside gets a cameo in the new V. Seriously. Seriously. Source.

    • I’ll admit that I enjoyed the Hudsucker Proxy, too.

And good V news… curious to see if they screw that up (then again, having re-watched the original, um, that may be hard to do…?).

    • Aw, man, the original miniseries is untouchable retro gold. Now, if you want to get to V: The Series, then we might have something to kick around…
