32 Days of Halloween III, Day 9: Vampires From the 80s

Sorry for the delay, I didn’t get back from the Poe vigil until five o’clock and then just sort of fell asleep at the keys halfway through this post. I have taken the liberty of removing the two lines of weird typing in which I started babbling about jellyfish smoking cigars before doing a faceplant on the keys and ruining the space bar with drool.

Thinking about Martin, one of the trailers we looked at last year, got me thinking about vampires and other good vampire movies. What sprang to mind, naturally was Near Dark, the Kathryn Bigelow portrait of vampires as ferocious bastards…and hey, they don’t sparkle.

Two things of note: Jenny Wright, who plays Mae, was previously the groupie in Pink Floyd: The Wall. I knew that, but I didn’t realize that was her screen debut. Also, there’s apparently a remake in development–which should surprise no one. Although, honestly? I would watch the shit out of a prequel that’s nothing but the adventures of those same vampire characters, running around in their RV wreaking havoc. Henriksen and Paxton are awesome, and Jenette Goldstein is woefully underutilized in films.

And, of course, my other favorite: Fright Night. Roddy McDowall = fantastic. (Have you seen where he was Satan, fighting Mr. Roarke on Fantasy Island?) It amazes me how much of the film this trailer gives away.

  • I have never seen “Near Dark” – will have to try to track it down as it sounds interesting.

I loved Fright Night in the 80’s – especially Chris Sarandon’s portrayal of sexy but lethal Jerry Dandrich.

Another of my fav vampire movies from the 80’s is “Lost Boys” with Jason Patric and Corey Haim. It is now one of my teen son’s favorite films.
