32 Days of Halloween III, Day 24: Frankenstein (1910)

Frankenstein 1910

It occurred to me that we apparently have never posted the original filmed version of Frankenstein, produced by Edison Studios back in 1910. It’s a short twelve minute silent film that is an interesting piece of cinema history. Sure, Patrick Ogle’s version of the monster looks like his fashion sense came from an 80s hair band and the cutting edge in FX from almost…Jebus, almost a century ago…is interesting to have for posterity. But. At four minutes in, when the “creation” sequence really kicks into gear, bear this in mind: if you had been watching this in 1910, you would have probably been crapping your pants.

The information on Wikipedia tells us that it was shot in three days. Here’s a reality TV show I’d like to watch: get a bunch of film students together, give them access to only the technology available in 1910–and see if they can “remake” the film as it was done at the time. That’s something somebody could do for the 100th anniversary of the film’s release next year. Hey, free idea.
