Ben and Jerry’s Red Velvet Cake Ice Cream – Review

Red Velvet Cake Ice Cream from Ben and Jerry's

There are certain things in life you enjoy and you can’t exactly say why you enjoy them. For me, Red Velvet Cake is one of those things. At first glance, of course, red velvet cake just looks like cake that’s…you know, just been dyed red. And that’s seemingly all there is to it. With this in mind I thought that maybe slicing into something and getting red as a result might appeal to the inner hunter gatherer in me. But then I had visions of my ancestors chasing giant mega-cakes across a steppe–perhaps even herding them off a cliff like they were woolly mammoths–and nobody wants that image in their head, so be glad you didn’t have it in yours.

But finding out that there’s a degree of cocoa involved…maybe that’s it. Regardless, it’s still a mystery. You might well ask why I’m going through all of this with you instead of talking about the ice cream. And the trouble is, if all I did was talk about the ice cream, this would be one damn short review. You see, this just might be the most nailed-on-the-head Ben and Jerry’s flavor in recent memory. The container proclaims: “Red Velvet Cake Batter Ice Cream with Red Velvet Cake Pieces & a Cream Cheese Frosting Swirl.” And, well, the damn thing just tastes exactly like red velvet cake. The title says it all.

[ad#longpost]This is a very good thing: it’s like the ice cream equivalent of a Jelly Belly. Somehow, those jelly beans taste like what they’re supposed to. Same thing here. I was afraid considering the last ice cream of theirs I tried that involved cake batter, called…wait for it…Cake Batter…missed the mark by including chocolate where none was necessary. And it’s serious business, as I said at the time, if I’m the one saying “No, ixnay on the chocolate.” If anything here, the cream cheese flavor of the frosting just melts into the creaminess of the ice cream and, well, you pass out due to the amount of sugar you’ve just ingested.

That is, of course, the one drawback to the ice cream: it is highly addictive, not unlike spooning crack cocaine into your mouth. It also will cause you to gain weight simply by looking at the container. For those of you who are reading this and wondering why the picture made your ass swell…my apologies.

Highly recommended…just red velvet cake addicts should be supervised so they don’t commit a tasty frozen suicide. If “Seppuku” means “stomach-cutting,” then this ritual would be known as “stomach-enlarging.”

  • Yes! Finally B & J does my favorite cake of all time. I’m in love with anything red velvet. This local doughnut place does red velvet donuts that are to die for. This ice cream and those donuts would be double bliss. I had been on the outs with B & J for a long time too. Their new flavors weren’t living up to the hype. This one does. Most importantly, they didn’t skimp on the cake chunks. The cartons that I’ve gotten so far were loaded with them. This has overthrown Phish Food, Half Baked & the mint cookie as my new favorite B&J flavor. 5 stars for them on this.

  • CT: It’s probably my #2 of all time. I would say that my legendary addiction to Festivus probably still beats it…but only by a skoche. :-) Thanks for the comment!

  • This is nothing more than red velvet cake ala mode, which is to say that it is sublimely delicious-maybe Ben and Jerry’s best flavor ever :)

  • Seriously? You think this tastes like Red Velvet Cake? Do yourself a favor and go out and try Duff’s Red Velvet Cake for Blue Bunny. This does not even come close. Not the right color, not really ‘cake’ (more gummy chewy things as in the B&J cheesecake). I know they try to get around their failure by calling it red velvet cake ‘BATTER’ flavor, but having made my fair share of red velvet cakes, I’ve yet to make one with a batter that tasted like this, or that was pink (ya gotta think that when you ad 4 oz of red food coloring to anything, it’s going to be dark and red). It’s an okay flavor…it’s just not really Red Velvet Anything. The B&J test kitchen needs to recall this, dig into some Blue Bunny, and try again.

  • Susan: Yeah, I think I was being serious when I wrote this. Wait, let me check.

Yes. Yes, I was being serious. Thanks for the comment.

  • I LOVE B&J’s Red Velvet Cake ice cream. I have not tried the Blue Bunny brand but will if I ever see it. I saw a video review and it looks scrumptious.

  • Ugh! What a total let down, B&J. Tasted like overly ripe sweet strawberry/cotton candy gummy mix. They missed the mark on this one…try try again.

  • The ice cream is nice enough, but Red Velvet Cake it is not. Someone just dyed a white cake red and threw it into the sour cream frosting ice cream.

  • Byron: Thanks for the comment but…sour cream frosting? This tastes like sour cream to you? Wow. If this tasted like sour cream to me, I wouldn’t be able to eat it. Hate that stuff.
