Music Monday: Amy Winehouse, Bastille, Birdy and More…

Amy Winehouse

So we begin this week with the sad news that we’ve lost Amy Winehouse. Rob submits her album Back to Black with these words: “An album this dark and tragic has never been wrapped in such a sweet voice. Well produced, catchy and to the point. Sad we lost such a voice.” And what a voice. Good night, Amy. Thanks for everything.

As always, we are here with music picks for your Monday, co-curated by Dr. Rob Levy. If you like what you hear, use the links provided to snag it for yourself from Amazon. Doing so through us gives us kickbacks, and those help pay for stuff like more bandwidth. And also so we can buy more music.

Bastille: Flaws Birdy: Shelter

One from me…it’s Bastille performing “Flaws.” They’re on a boat.

The single is available through links available on their Soundcloud page.

I started listening to this and had no idea who the hell “Birdy” was. I hear “Birdy” I think…the Peter Gabriel soundtrack? Anyway, apparently this girl won the Open Mic UK competition at age 12 and is now 15. Which means…Jesus, I am old. That’s what that means. Anyway, an excellent voice here.

Oddly, this doesn’t appear to be available yet on this side of the pond. There’s just her first single as an MP3. So oh well.

Widowspeak: Gun Shy
Peter Elkas: Party of One
Funky Lowlives: Somewhere Else is Here

Back over to Rob for Widowspeak and their 7″ “Gun Shy” single. Rob says, “Yes, a 45 rpm. But the B-side cover of ‘Wicked Game’ is pretty awesome. Think Mazzy Star in a boozy nightclub with the Bad Seeds!” I’m a sucker for cover songs. So…here we go:

The single is available as vinyl or an MP3 download from Amazon.

Here we have Peter Elkas and “Party of One,” another bit of smoothness for a rough Monday.

Oddly, not available as an MP3 download but the CD (even considered an import) is available for pretty cheap.

And lastly, it’s a track from The Funky Lowlives: “Float Through Stars.” A nice bit of chilly groove-ness.

The individual track is snaggable here. The album is called Somewhere Else is Here and is available from Amazon as both a CD and MP3 download.
