Scarlett Johansson as Black Widow - Avengers poster

Each week we try to bring you a catch-up post on the latest in pop culture news. Because reading a whole bunch of individual posts just takes too much bloody time. And we want you to have a life. So enjoy.

Speaking of having a life: it’s Black Friday. And if you’re going to snag some Black Friday deals (or anything at all, really) from Amazon, please do it through us. You can even use this link. When you do, we get kickbacks and those help to keep Need Coffee alive. Many thanks, amigos.

  • Marvel has released a series of Avengers teaser posters. That’s a snippet there with Scarlett as Black Widow. For the whole lot, featuring all the major characters, check out this link.
  • Arrested Development lives. It’s coming back in early 2013 thanks to Netflix. No idea where a rumored feature film is at this point. Dear Netflix: keep some money handy for when AMC gets stupid and decides Walking Dead is too expensive. Just a tip. Source: Variety.

  • Fans of Jon Snow actor Kit Harington will be pleased to hear that he’s going to play King Arthur in Arthur and Lancelot from Warner Brothers, expected to begin production early next year. Joel Kinniman (upcoming Darkest Hour) is Lancelot and David Dobkin (Change-Up) is scribing and helming. Source: Variety.
  • If you, like me, often say to yourself, “I sleep so deeply that only Brian Blessed could wake me…” well, here you go.
  • Interesting: SyFy has ordered a pilot script for a Booster Gold series. Source.
  • Elisabeth Shue is stepping in for Marg Helgenberger, who exited CSI. That happens February 15th. Source: Variety.
  • Charlie Brooker will be providing a 2011 Wipe year-in-review show for BBC 4. This is excellent. Source.
  • Dexter gets two more seasons and then it’s probably done. Michael C. Hall has got a new contract–one that pays him substantially more per episode–and thus you get twelve episodes each for seasons seven and eight. Right now the creative team is working under the assumption that those two years will end the show although you can bet your bottom dollar if they can get hold of your bottom dollar they will use it to fund season nine. I’m just saying. Source: Variety.
  • It’s very important to know your Fishbone. The lack of knowledge made for a very unique and awkward situation on the 21st when Michele Bachmann came on the Jimmy Fallon show and The Roots used “Lyin’ Ass Bitch” to play her on. Check this out:

Incidentally, The Roots are now my heroes.

  • Italian Shoes will star Judi Dench and Anthony Hopkins and be directed by Kenneth Branagh. Production kicks off whenever they can get their schedules in gear (and schedule conflicts are why–reportedly–Branagh turned down Thor 2). The film is, according to the Variety article, “the story of a retired surgeon living on a remote island in Sweden, who is forced to confront his past mistakes when he’s reunited with an old flame.”
  • Fans of MTV’s Liquid Television should know that there’s now a website featuring shows like The Head and The Maxx along with other content.
  • Flotsam, Ursula and Jetsam from the Manila production of The Little Mermaid

  • Apparently a production of The Little Mermaid has hit Manila and it’s been redesigned. Costume and photo gallery here.

  • Warner Brothers can neither get a man for Man From UNCLE nor somebody to direct said man. People have passed on starring in the film? Clooney, Matt Damon, Depp and Bradley Cooper. And now Steven Soderbergh will not be directing. The film is more than likely not dead but just languishing in development hell. Source: Variety.
  • So what is Out of Time? According to the Variety article, it’s a Canadian series that will be happening soon. Ten episodes have been ordered. A female cop in 2077 is taking some terrorists to be executed and then bang, they wind up in 2012 and hijinks ensue. Yeah, I know, it’s not entirely compelling stuff…at least until I read that Thandie Newton may be interested in playing the cop. If so, I’m in.
  • Have you seen the trailer for Rampart? Woody Harrelson taking the safety off and playing a full-on 1999 corrupt LAPD cop? I’m in:

James Ellroy scribes? And that cast? Yeah, I think we may have a Best Actor nod here. It looks like it’s already opened for its Oscar run and will go limited in January.

  • Star Trek 2, in 3D, has a date: May 17, 2013. Source.
  • An utter crapload of fantastic TwoMorrows material is on sale at their official site now through December 5th. If you have a comic geek on your gift list, seriously: check them out. You’ll be glad you did. Their stuff is amazing.
