Music Monday: Metric, Sigur Ros, Union of Knives & More…

Metric in acoustic mode

More music picks for your Monday. If you like what you hear, use the links provided to snag it for yourself from Amazon. Doing so through us gives us kickbacks, and those help pay for stuff like more bandwidth. And also so we can buy more music.

Oh, Metric. You with your Emily Haines and your devastating cover versions. And your cover of the Tom Waits-penned Marianne Faithfull classic, “Strange Weather,” makes me want to drink almost as much as the two better known cited versions. Just perhaps a lighter whisky. Just keep covering the songs and killing us softly. No, we’re fine, thanks.

This is from the new Deluxe version of their latest album, Synthetica. The MP3 bundle is already out…but the CD lists a December release date. No idea.

Now…speaking of live music that really goes to work on you, here’s a live version of Sigur Ros doing “untitled 1 (a.k.a. ‘Vaka’)” which I had to double check the spelling of. Their stuff, whether live or studio, makes me wonder why they aren’t tapped every other day to score films.

The studio version can be found on their album ( ). Which you can snag here.

And an older track that I’m sort of surprised I haven’t included before: “Evil Has Never” from Union of Knives and their 2006 album, Violence and Birdsong. It’s an import but is available from Amazon sellers for cheap new and cheaper used. Note: mildly disturbing video.

Next we go to Husky and the title track from their album Forever So. It came out earlier this year and is available for less than $4 in MP3 form, though it’s missing a track that’s on the CD. No idea.

We end with a pair–first up, the remains of Throbbing Gristle, aka X-TG, and their cover of Nico’s album Desertshore. This is the first track from that, a positively fantastic cover of “Janitor of Lunacy.” Which is one of my titles here at the site. That comes out December 4th and can be pre-ordered here.

And lastly, Jazzman Records has an excellent compilation out this week called Jukebox Mambo, focusing on Afro-Cuban and Latin music. We’ve selected The Red Callender Sextet and “Eee Ooo Voodoo.” Classic stuff and available for super cheap as an MP3 set.
