Next, Frightened Rabbit. I could have sworn I sampled them last year and passed them by (perhaps their EP they had out), but maybe I was in a fugue state or something. Because now that Pedestrian Verse has hit, I do rather enjoy it. As a sample here’s them performing “Late March, Death March” on a radio station that I don’t have to mention because they’re going to make damn sure you know who they are. And next, the new album from John Grant, Pale Green Ghosts, which hits this week. I urge you to check out the cover art: on it, it looks like Grant is enjoying a lovely coffee. Next up, from Glasgow, it’s Chvrches (pronounced “churches” apparently…at least they didn’t make it “ch-five-ches” or something). Their first EP, Recover, hit back in March–this is the music video for the title track. Fun with synth? Why, yes! Currently less than $4 on Amazon.
How can a band have this much string action going on and I’m this late to the party? The band in question is Miracles of Modern Science, originally out of Princeton. Any track where a mandolin and string section play nice like this…I’m in. It’s the first single from the album Dog Year, out back in 2011. Very tasty. The whole album is available for less than $6 on Amazon. Also tasty.
Next, another music video for “Every Song” by the band out of Minneapolis and Chicago, On an On. Their album Give In hit back in January. They are, among other appearances, slated for Bonnaroo. Excellent stuff. (Amazon: CD; MP3; Vinyl.)
Part of my parade of catching up with 2012’s music that I missed, I ran across Interstellar by Frankie Rose out of Brooklyn. This is her second album (the first was released as “Frankie Rose and the Outs,” apparently). The entire thing is excellent–but for a taste, here’s the title track. (Amazon: CD; MP3; Vinyl.)
And we wind up with Typhoon, an utterly mental array of musicians–a twelve-piece and the following example lets you sample the whole buffet, just about. When the horns kicked in at about a minute, I was sold. This is “Dreams of Cannibalism” (free download right from the widget there). Their album, White Lighter, hits August 20th.
