10.22.11 by Widge @ 7:19 am ![]() Day 23 is reserved for creepy, evil, killer children. I mean, children are pretty damn creepy to begin with, if you think about it (you probably shouldn't think about it). But a good example of taking creepy to 11 is the wide-eyed apparition in this trailer for Mario Bava's 1966 horror flick, Kill, Baby, Kill! A baroness is having the local villagers killed so her dead daughter can have their souls. The obvious answer to the question of "What do you get the young girl who has everything?" The baroness must be stopped or...bad things. Very bad things. Very bad things that have creepy child laughter--the worst kind. The opening bit about "Shiver and shake, quiver and quake" makes me think if the film was made here in America, somebody would have made a swingin' theme song for the film, a la The Blob. 10.21.11 by Widge @ 10:00 pm ![]() Today was supposed to be the revised Rapture, i.e. destruction of the world and stuff. A bit disappointed since there was a chance I could still grab a Chick-Fil-A restaurant. But I thought we would go with an appropriate bit of Apocalyptic poetry by Stephen Crane. Enjoy. 10.21.11 by Widge @ 7:40 pm ![]() It's Peter Cushing Night! That means there's a better than average chance we're going to vampires...or maybe Frankenstein? Nope, you had it in one. Vampires it is. And specifically, we're talking the 1970 film The Vampire Lovers (we've post the trailer in our sexy vampire trailer roundup previously). Instead of Dracula, however, Cushing and company are facing off with Carmilla, the original female vampire (novel published in 1872). Cushing is "The General." And that would be Ingrid Pitt in the Carmilla role. Enjoy the mayhem. Categorized as: 32 Days of Halloween

10.21.11 by Widge @ 7:02 am ![]() Today is our day for Peter Cushing. And in poking around to try and find something new to share with you, I found this: an array of guest appearances Cushing made on Morecambe & Wise. For those on our side of the pond who don't know, Eric Morecambe and Ernie Wise are probably the biggest Brit comedy duo ever. They are referenced by modern comedians all the time and some of their bits have moved into the stuff of legends. They had a show, named after themselves, which aired for nearly ten years on the BBC and then moved to Thames Television. One of the longest running jokes they had was that of Peter Cushing, who first made a guest appearance in 1969. And then...never got paid. Though he kept coming back every so often...for years...trying to get the money the two owed him. Just brilliant. I've created a playlist of six appearances. The first is 1969...the last one is 1980. Enjoy. Categorized as: 32 Days of Halloween

10.20.11 by Widge @ 8:26 pm ![]() Tonight is the night where our theme calls for something with "From" in the title. Lame? Yes. But when you have thirty-nights to fill with movies, you grab onto whatever you can that will assist. We're going with Universal's first ever 3D flick, It Came From Outer Space directed by Jack Arnold, based on a story by Uncle Ray Bradbury and featuring amongst its cast The Professor from Gilligan's Island. Makes sense that after this Universal would tap Arnold to do the film he's best known for, The Creature From the Black Lagoon, since it was also in 3D. (And if you ever get a chance to catch it in 3D in a cinema, do it.) Enjoy. And hey, if you've got some glasses and want to give the 3D a whirl, then the non-embeddable 3D version can be found here. Good luck. Categorized as: 32 Days of Halloween

10.20.11 by Widge @ 7:48 am ![]() Day 21 of 32 Days of Halloween is up in the air at this point from a traditional point of view, so we'll consult Rox of Spazhouse and her crystal ball of awesomeness. What she's uncovered is an episode of Studio One. The show was sponsored by Westinghouse (usually found under the full title of Westinghouse Studio One) and was an anthology series, featuring everything from 12 Angry Men (the story's first appearance) to Wuthering Heights. Rox found us the first episode of the tenth season: The Night America Trembled. This features a dramatic recreation of the events of October 30, 1938. That's when the Mercury Theatre did their in/famous War of the Worlds radio program and freaked everybody right the hell out. Among the cast of the dramatization is Ed Asner, and Edward R. Murrow hosts. Other faces to look for? James Coburn, John Astin and Warren Beatty. Categorized as: 32 Days of Halloween

10.19.11 by Widge @ 7:00 pm ![]() That's right...as part of Blaxploitation Day of 32 Days of Halloween, it's time to go to the #1 hit of the blaxploitation horror subgenre: Blacula. Of course, on the surface, it looks like it's going to be 70stastic nonsense. But if there's anything that manages to elevate such a relatively goofy premise, it's William Freaking Marshall. His screen presence is amazing. His voice is incredible. If there is anybody who can pull off the title role, it's him. Enjoy. Categorized as: 32 Days of Halloween

10.19.11 by Widge @ 7:41 am ![]() It's Blaxsploitation Day on 32 Days of Halloween. And our pick is voodoo zombie fest Sugar Hill. We'll get to the trailer in a second, but the gist is this: gangsters killed Sugar's boyfriend when he wouldn't play ball (metaphorically speaking). Therefore, Sugar is going to get some voodoo powers on her side and kick some serious ass (literally speaking). Not only can she have you zombified, but the process replaces your eyes with shiny ball bearings, apparently. So beware. Now I want you to pay close attention to scary-as-hell Mama Maitresse.
