03.17.07 by Widge @ 8:00 pm ![]() Simply because we can, and it looks ludicrous, we've created a page for our complete tag fog, where you can browse all the tags used on the site, in alphabetical order, with the size and color changing according to how often they're used. Mouseover to see the actual number of times. I'm sure there's a thesis in here somewhere. And it's a very low tag cloud which makes visibility much lower than normal...hence, tag fog. Enjoy. 03.03.07 by Widge @ 5:39 pm ![]() Okay. Comments are back up. All over. I can see the spam coming but we're able to take it for the moment. As I've mentioned elsewhere, if the fit hits the shan, then I'll slam the door again. But for right now, welcome back to the comments. I've missed them, if you can but dig it. Now--for your awareness, another issue I'm trying to work. For some strange reason, the feed will pop old posts back up as though they were new and/or edited. I've seen this on Bloglines and some other readers, but not on Google Reader. I believe this is because Google Reader will process a post once and if it changes later on, it just ignores it. I'm trying to nail down where the problem is at this point, although it seems to be happening to some other sites too. I think it's a Wordpress issue, but I'm not sure yet. So--if you're seeing this, my apologies. But I'm trying to figure it out. In the meantime, you should be able to tell Bloglines to ignore edited posts and that will be a workaround if you use that reader. And, of course, if anybody has any ideas about WTF is happening, all ideas are welcome. Even the ones about extra-terrestrials. Categorized as: Admin

01.06.07 by Widge @ 11:12 pm ![]() Well, last year I was surprised as hell to learn that we won Best Kept Secret Weblog for the 2006 Bloggies. Had no idea such a thing was even possible for us to achieve. But we did, and that was thanks to all of you mad caffeinated weasels. It's time again...in fact, the nominations close on the 10th. So why not go for it again and see what happens, yes? Here's the link. From looking over their site, it looks like we're eligible for the following categories: Best American Weblog Best Kept Secret, you say? Didn't you guys already win that, you ask? Well, yeah. True enough. But there's nothing in the rules that says we can't get nominated for it again, honestly. And considering nobody's pounding on our door giving me an offer so I can become a bloodless, spineless sell-out to some major corporation or something, I would say we're still a pretty good secret. But that's just my take on it. YMMV. Nominate whoever you like for the rest of the categories. Hell, if you don't think we're worth nominating in those categories and some other site should go in instead, feel free. We just appreciate the thought. P.S. Sorry the comments aren't back yet. Apparently the only group of people to whom we're not a secret anymore are the spammers. That's why you might run into a 503 server error or two during the course of your day here. I've got the techies looking into it because I have no idea what the spambastards are up to now. So fun. Send help and espresso. Categorized as: Admin

12.25.06 by Widge @ 5:21 am ![]() Yes, well, I didn't want to have to do this, but they've left me no choice. I just spent the last four hours trying to batten down the hatches against a comment spam attack that you would not believe. That's right--four hours, from one in the morning till five in the morning on Christmas--fighting off a comment spam attack. That may be why any of you other lunatics who are up right now couldn't reach the site. We were getting pinged a few hundred times from each IP address. I'll probably post something over on my blog with the gory details about what I've learned, but given a choice between comments being open and the site being up, I'll take the site being up. I'm sure you would agree. If I'm understanding what the tech folk at Dreamhost are telling me, then making the comments open only to registered people wouldn't help matters. Again, look for gory details soon. Otherwise, I'm sorry as hell to have to close down the comments, but at this point, if you want to give feedback on the site, hit us up on the Gabfest. Suffice to say Wordpress is many things and a glorious piece of work but it plus all the plugins in the world won't save your ass if they really want to come after you. Comments will come back when somebody can come up with a way to get them open again without taking the site down. And that person will get swag from me, rest assured. Update: Gory details are here. 12.14.06 by Widge @ 12:02 am ![]() The fine folks at Dreamhost figured out what was causing us to sporadically go Tango Uniform--we were being smacked by a distributed spam attack in our comments. So they've taken steps and we should be okay now. Remain vigilant! I know I am--I'm double-Fooshing it tonight, baby! Categorized as: Admin
