04.24.08 by Widge @ 1:02 am ![]() Here's the long and short of it. 1. The server did Something Odd. Not the comic strip, an actual Something Odd. This Something Odd involved it cutting all ties between it and the database where the site is served from. This is what is technically known as an Incredibly Goddamn Heinous Incident or IGHI in the technical vernacular. This has been fixed and I'm hoping will not reoccur. B. The contests broke. This is because the contests also need database loving. Without database loving they wither and die. These have been fixed. They took a long time to get fixed because finally Elizabeth D. pointed out they were broken and I didn't think about them in the melee of the IGHI. Everyone tell Elizabeth thank you. 04.06.08 by Widge @ 11:09 pm Quick snippet: Damien just pinged me asking for a LiveJournal feed for Needcoffee. And sure enough, we didn't have one. We do now and I think this is the link you need if you want to add us to your Friends list: http://syndicated.livejournal.com/needcoffee_rss/ Oh, and I also created a little app-thing for Facebook that will let you display Needcoffee madness in your profile. Find that here. Anybody else wishing they could see our stuff somewhere it isn't? Lemme know, I'll see what I can do. Danke! Categorized as: Admin

04.06.08 by Widge @ 1:41 am Well, I think it's pretty clear what the most expensive item you guys bought from Amazon through the site during the first three months of 2008: it made us so happy, we've already blogged about it. But what were the most popular items, i.e. the ones that had the most repeat sales? Well, by far that honor goes to Richard Simmons. ![]() No, I'm serious. Various flavors of Sweatin' to the Oldies were purchased. Not to mention related titles like Disco Sweat and 60s Blast Off. On DVD and VHS, even. Plus some Simmons-branded exercise clothing. No shit. Hey, if the site (or Dindrane's review of Sweatin' to the Oldies) inspires you to get in some exercise, we say go for it. Lord knows we're parked on our butts enough here where we could use some. 03.30.08 by Widge @ 6:04 pm Okay, so we've made a couple of changes. First of all, welcome to the center of your screen. I dunno, I kinda like it out here. Feels a bit roomier, you know? It started to get to where we were jammed up against the website that was right off the lefthand side of your screen. I know you couldn't see it, but man, talk about not having a side yard. Felt like living in one of those subdivisions where you can literally lean out your window and step into the open window of the house next door. So we've done that. Also, in case you've noticed, we use tags. And when we are talking about something or somebody that we've written a few things about, we have a tendency to link to our tags so you can read more on that subject. So if I were to mention Mike Patton, and if you were to click through, you'd see something like this: ![]() Categorized as: Admin

Howdy, friends. I have a proposition for you. As you are probably aware (or maybe not, because I frankly suck at self-promotion), I have two books in print. I'm working on some other things to bring back into print even as I type this. But for now: two books. One, a novel of regular straight dramatic fiction--that's Mystics on the Road to Vanishing Point. The other is a short story anthology--that's Magnificent Desolation. They're available from Amazon right now. People continue to buy them, for which I'm grateful. I can see the purchases come through our Amazon affiliation. I've released them under a Creative Commons license as well, so you can download them for free. I realize my One Tusk site is dormant at the moment so here's some direct links here for Mystics and here for Desolation. Categorized as: Admin

03.17.08 by Widge @ 1:29 pm ![]() So, let me set this up. As you know--and as we try to remind you in a gentle, non-annoying way (one of the few gentle, non-annoying things we try to do on this site)--when you make purchases from Amazon through us, we get kickbacks. We figure if you're going to shop at Amazon anyway Everybody wins because while there are a few ads on the site and a few blatant reminders about our affiliations and eBay Anyway, we don't do that shit. And we hope you appreciate that we don't. Even though, as we've mentioned before, we're trying to go pro with this so day jobs can be killed and we can give you more of this mayhem that you, for some twisted reason, seem to like. 01.31.08 by Widge @ 10:48 pm ![]() Hi folks. A quick word. For those of you who think, "Man, if I only had the ability to read Needcoffee on my phone while I'm stuck in line at the grocery store...but damn, the site takes so long to load..." fret no longer. Point your phones to http://mobile.needcoffee.com or, if you really want to conserve time, http://m.needcoffee.com. Either one works. That redirects to a Google Reader filtered, stripped down version of the site that breaks it down and makes it nice and clean and easy to read in your phone. Granted, the embedded videos don't show up, but I've not seen a phone that those work on. If anybody knows how that works, give me a ping. If you have any issues with it or suggestions, let me know. Idea skimmed from Google Tutor. Categorized as: Admin

01.24.08 by Widge @ 2:52 am ![]() Okay, you might remember that I put out a call for assistance on creating a OpenSearch plugin for Firefox. Because it was driving me mad. Well, DeWitt over at Unto.net helped me out. And he says that he's the creator of OpenSearch. So how cool is that? It's like that scene in Back to School where Vonnegut shows up to help Rodney Dangerfield write a paper on Vonnegut. Anyway, if you've been online somewhere and thought, "Wow, I sure wish I could search Needcoffee without having to go to Needcoffee," now you can access our mayhem from the comfort of...wherever it is you are at the time. Instructions for Firefox and IE7 follow... Categorized as: Admin

01.20.08 by Widge @ 8:58 pm ![]() Okay, sorry for the dearth of posts this weekend but as you can see I've reworked the sidebar there, now with improved search bits. You can search the Web, the site, Amazon and eBay without leaving the comfort of...well, um...any page on the site. And when you do, you're supporting the site, because Amazon and eBay searches there should give us kickbacks if you ultimately buy something. And there's a link to our Extreme Cafepress Store, since the link was a bit buried admittedly. Now it's front and center. So if you want some of our insane shirts, here's your chance. Be our billboard today. And--I've been killing myself trying to make a Firefox search plugin. But I am an English Major and should not be allowed to code. Because the goddamn thing keeps saying it can't download the file even though it's right where it's supposed to be. So. Here's my offer... Categorized as: Admin
