Multilingual Saturday Morning Cartoons!
Posted on 08.09.08 by Widge @ 6:28 am

So Paul sent me the second part of this and it got me thinking about Saturday morning...how it used to be cartoons all morning. But what if you had a Saturday morning cartoon lineup right after the incident of the Tower of Babel? (Yes, I really do think like this.) I've tried to find some classic cartoon bits jumbled up with various languages, so even our friends from across the ponds will be lost on at least one.

First, Flash Gordon in Spanish. "No me gusta Flash Gordon, ja ja ja! Ay--un hombre de león!" "El grrrr!"

If any of these turn out to be the foreign language equivalents of "I'm the Juggernaut, bitch!" then you have my apologies...

Hanna-Barbera's Way of Saying "Don't Do Drugs"
Posted on 08.04.08 by Widge @ 6:00 am

This is an anti-marijuana ad from 1970 created by Hanna-Barbera.

Okay, so, I don't know about you...but what I take away from this is never hold hands with an anthropomorphic cigar. Because he'll lead you to the supporting cast of the movie Lifeforce. After you...um, gain briefly the powers of Lightspeed from Power Pack.

And now you know why I've never taken drugs. Because we've discussed the inside of my head before and they're just not necessary.

Happy Birthday, Ray Harryhausen
Posted on 06.29.08 by Widge @ 9:32 am

Ray Harryhausen turns 88 today. Happy birthday to a guy who's responsible for stop motion as we know it today. And is there anyone alive today who didn't think the Sinbad movies were the coolest goddamn thing ever? Harryhausen gave us skeletons that got up and fought with swords and shields. What a genius. But he's not just in the full-on gloriously whacked out creature business. We'll get to that in a minute. First, let's look at 1946, for Mother Goose Stories:

I realize that the quality on these is not great--so I recommend if you're a fan picked up the Early Years Collection.

WALL-E Takes It To The Streets
Posted on 06.13.08 by Widge @ 7:22 am

This is a rolling advertisement/animatronic character from the upcoming Pixar film. If you like it and want one, it will probably be in the Hammacher Schlemmer catalog in time for Christmas. Granted, if you have enough money to buy one, please adopt me.

Watch "Finding Nemo" For Free
Posted on 06.10.08 by Widge @ 9:07 pm
Screengrab... you can find the real thing <a href=\"http://disney.go.com/dxd/index.html?channel=66142\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">here</a>.

Dixar is offering up Finding Nemo, streaming free online through Friday. (You go there and click the "What's on DXD" link to get it.) This as part of their summer Wonderful World of Disney routine. Monsters Inc. and Peter Pan will also be shown over the course of the summer, with some other Disney movies that are less interesting. Hollywood Reporter told us this--all except the editorial comments about the quality of the films picked. That's all me.

I will say...this is interesting. I didn't watch the whole film, but you've got one commercial before it starts, so that's pretty tolerable. Plus the quality is really quite good, especially for streaming and free. The Reporter article states that the advertising isn't quite figured out yet--which makes sense, since some sort of commercial for the Nemo DVD would seem to be a no-brainer. However, their oversight is our gain. While this is both cool and commendable, please note that the company's karma will be set back to zero following the release of the Jungle Book 2: Special Edition DVD on June 17th.
