The Animal Book
Posted on 03.29.08 by Widge @ 12:32 am

It's apparently stop motion animation night here at the TechnoCave. Cabinet of Wonders posted some info on a cool-looking animated short called "The Animal Book" by Second Home Productions. You can read about it here, and see the trailer below:

It's sort of like what would happen if you threw Tim Burton, Neil Gaiman and one of my favorite shorts, "More," into a blender.

I Want Him in the Games Until He Gets Recycled

We've recently seen the Tron lightcycle sequence recreated with actual bikes. Now see it done with stop motion and cardboard.

Bonus points for the making-of bits at the end.

Dr. Seuss Animated Characters For Ford
Posted on 03.17.08 by Widge @ 12:15 am

Saturday Morning Blog knew very little about these Ford commercials starring Dr. Seuss characters. I know even less. But I do concur that they are rather interesting.

At least they didn't do "Horton Hears a Rattle in His Ford Engine." Although that might have been even more interesting. Who knows?

World's Oldest Animated Character is a Goat

World

A piece of pottery has been revealed to exhibit the world's oldest known instance of animation: a cavorting goat. (Follow the link to see an animated image of the goat in action.)

A 5,200-year-old bowl found in Iran’s Burnt City in the 1970s features a series of five images that researchers have only recently identified as being sequential, much like those in a zoetrope. Giving the bowl a spin, one would see a goat leaping to snatch leaves from a tree...

Just like ArchaeoBlog (where we found this article), we count nine images. But it must be that New Math we keep hearing about.

In a further comment, researchers have also proven scientifically that this piece of pottery is a better piece of animation than all the Disney cheapquels put together. "Give me a few seconds of a leaping goat over the whole of Bambi 2 any day of the week, pal," one remarked.

When I Yawn, Bats Fly Out of My Mouth Too

When the Lady Porphyre cannot sleep, we all win. She decided to pull together a list of all the Oscar-winning animated shorts you can find online on YouTube, starting with "Flowers and Trees" from (1931-32, embedded below) all the way up to a couple that are nominated for this year.
