Last Exile OST: Dolce Triade - CD Review
Posted on 08.25.04 by Dindrane @ 10:12 pm

Label: Pioneer

Last Exile is one of the best anime series to come along in years, and part of that success is the music. Beginning with the Celtic-inspired pipes of the fantastic opening theme "Cloud Age Symphony," this disc is a winner start to finish. The flute and strings of "A Morning in Norkia" are worth the cost of the disc by themselves--but don't miss the sweet, John Lennonesque "Skywriting." "Hello, Kitty Girl" has real personality between the flute and the bass notes, and hitomi's voice is always welcome, as here in "Requiem in the Air." The lyrics for songs with words are provided, along with English translations. Like the show, some pieces are dreamy, some are more made for action, and some are just ancient and wonderful. Whether or not you've seen the show (and you really should see it!), you should give this disc a shot. Instrumental fans won't be disappointed, and fans of vocal tunes will be won over with the very first strains of "Cloud Age Symphony."

Hellsing OST: Raid - CD Review
Posted on 08.25.04 by Dindrane @ 10:12 pm
Cover art for Hellsing Original Soundtrack: Raid

Label: Pioneer

Hellsing is beyond a doubt one of the best anime series around, but is the music part of the reason, or what's holding it back from being the best? Luckily, I'm happy to report that it's part of the show's success. The funky/strange "Sea of Chaos" contrasts nicely with the sweet and haunting "Bodhisattva of Cathedral." Other solid choices are "Act of Demon or the Work of God," "Non-Neurosis Tunes-Who the Hell Are You?" and the driving, no-nonsense "When You Start the War, Fight with Arrows, Spears, and Swords!" that sounds exactly like you would expect a song with that title to sound. And of course, the rollicking theme song, "World Without Logos," is just excellent. From the calm "Requiem for the Living" to the moody and almost scary "Original Sin—For not keeping virginity," you'll know this one is a great choice for music fans, even if you've never seen the show and don't care to.

The creators of such anime titles as serial experiments lain, Hellsing, and Haibane Renmai are back with a title even stranger and more engrossing than ever. Lukuss is an experimental city buried deep underground, where fighting pits and cruel gangs are the only rule. Yoshii is an explorer from the surface who feels drawn to see the world below; we see the length of time it takes him to get there, emphasizing how removed Lukuss is from the "real" world.
