The Return of Cooler showcases Goku, Piccolo, Vegeta, and the rest in battle against one of the best villains in DBZ history: Cooler. Though defeated many episodes ago, he's back and nastier than ever. This feature opens with a giant, space-faring robotic sphere attacking New Namek, reaching its tentacles of evil around the planet and causing world-wide destruction. This is the Big Gete Star, and it's worse than you think. Meanwhile, Goku and friends are on their way to New Namek for a visit and arrive just in time to see the Namekians enslaved to this mysterious power as their world dies around them. An army of metallic Cyclopean Guards awaits Our Heroes, as does their leader, our heroes' evil nemesis: Cooler.

Dragonball Z: Fusion: Ambush (1996) - DVD Review
Posted on 12.07.03 by Dindrane @ 7:15 am

Film:
DVD:

Original Japanese Version by Akira Toriyama

Features:

  • Contains episodes 248-250
  • Trailers

Dindrane's Anime Warnings:

  • Animated violence
  • Endangered children

Released by FUNimation
Rating: 13+
Region: 1
Anamorphic: N/A; episodes appear in their original 1.33:1 format.

My Advice: Buy it.

The Majin-Buu Saga continues in the new Fusion storyline as three more episodes bring us more fine DBZ arse-kicking. First up, in "A Whole New Gohan," the fusion of Goten and Trunks, known as Gotenks, finishes its half-hour time allowance, but that wasn't enough. Buu gets ready to devour them, too, just as Gohan returns from the Supreme Kai's world all souped up himself. "Search for Survivors" brings us a desperate ploy by Buu after Gohan beats him at every turn--he blows himself up. Gohan, however, is ready for this to be a ploy so Buu can just buy time to regenerate or plot some new evil. In "Majin-Buu Transforms," Buu shows back up, just as Gohan predicted, and he does have a new trick up his sleeve--absorbing the bodies and powers of his enemies. After Buu absorbs Piccolo and Gotenks, it's hard to believe even Gohan's new powers will be able to stop this new "Super Buu."

Pic from Dragonball Z: Imperfect Cell: Race Against Time

The Cell Saga continues in three more episodes taking the battle to a whole new level. In "Our Hero Awakens," Trunks copes with the knowledge that Cell came from his own future and wonders what role he may have played in that situation. Meanwhile, Cell continues his reign of terror, blasting more civilians, including Krillin. Goku is up again finally, but the androids may prove too much for him. In "Time Chamber," Goku, Gohan, Trunks, and Vegeta train in Kami's Hyperbolic Time Chamber, which can only be used twice in a lifetime. This will allow them to cram a year's worth of training and new techniques into one day, but, meanwhile, the androids have shown up at Master Roshi's island looking for Goku, leaving only Piccolo to fend them off. Finally, in "The Monster is Coming," Vegeta and Trunks continue their training in the Time Chamber and fight to push past Super Saiyan levels. Piccolo seems to be winning against Android 17, but Cell doesn't seem willing to let this stand.

Beyblade, Vol. 1: Let It Rip! (2002) - DVD Review
Posted on 12.07.03 by Dindrane @ 7:14 am

Film:
DVD:

Directed by Toshifumi Kawase
Character Design by Takahiro Umehara and Park Ki Deog

Features:

  • Bonus sixth episode

Dindrane's Anime Warnings:

  • Inexplicable excitement
  • Pointless quasi-mysticism
  • Gang warfare

Released by: Pioneer
Rating: 7+
Region: 1
Anamorphic: N/A; appears in its original 1.33:1 format

My Advice: Skip it.

Young Tyson dreams of being the best Beyblader in the world, and he thinks he's almost there. But when his duel with a local expert Beyblader gets interrupted by a mysterious stranger named Kai, Tyson may have bitten off more than he can chew when he challenges Kai to a battle. Kai, it seems, is the leader of a Beyblade gang, known as the Blade Sharks, and they're undefeated. How can Our Hero hope to defeat their special techniques and deep knowledge of their blades?

Before you watch this disc, you need to understand that "Beyblades" are tops. Most of them have some little jagged blades attached to them, but these blades don't actually damage anyone else or even other tops. So when a character references their "blade," they mean their top. And the Blade Sharks gang is a top gang. A gang. Of top-players. Tops. Each top is supposed to be sort of possessed by a sentient spirit called a "bitbeast." We don't get to see much of these spirits, but they are related to the player's ancestors and get more powerful as the character learns to properly respect and learn about his ancestors.
