06.26.07 by Widge @ 2:42 am ![]() Wow. This is taken from D'Aulnoy's Fairy Tales, published in 1923. ASIFA-Hollywood Animation Archive has a fantastic selection of his work posted online. For more info on the man himself, Lines and Colors has a great article up as well. Categorized as: Art and Stimuli

06.16.07 by Widge @ 10:37 pm ![]() This watercolor by Phineas X. Jones is truly badass. The phrase "feudal Japanese cephalopods" should be used more often, I think. Categorized as: Art

06.14.07 by Widge @ 5:28 pm ![]() This is sheer, unadulterated genius: a cuckoo clock where Jack Nicholson, as Jack Torrance, crashes through the door every hour on the hour and yells "Heeeere's Johnny!" Oh, and Shelley Duvall screams bloody murder. It appears that this bit by Chris Dimino is just a work of art at this point, but sweet damn, I want one. I want an entire line of horror-themed cuckoo clocks. "They're Coming to Get You, Barbara," followed by Johnny coming through the door after her like towards the end of the film? Hell yes. Hell yes. I also wish we had a video of the thing in action. I guess we'll have to make do with the original, posted after the break. Categorized as: Art

04.29.07 by Widge @ 3:49 am ![]() Most excellent artist Michel Gagné gives you a tour through what the animal kingdom would look like if they has been cruelly exposed to a thirty-six hour American Idol marathon. Of course, that being a bad idea is about the only thing PETA and I agree on. So. No, but seriously, the book Frenzied Fauna is now out of print, so Gagné is sharing by putting the whole thing online. Nice. For those who aren't familiar with Gagné's work, you probably already know him by the brilliant short, "Prelude to Eden," included after the break... Categorized as: Art

04.27.07 by Widge @ 1:56 am ![]() Okay, we have now entered the realm of the slightly fucked up. We just received this press release from Capla Kesting Fine Art:
With removable innards? So, what, this is just a big interactive game of Operation? Hey, that might actually be cool. Anyway, it goes on... Categorized as: Art

04.13.07 by Widge @ 1:54 pm ![]() Boing Boing points us to an array of sci-fi and fantasy art at the Roq La Rue Gallery in Seattle. Everybody from Charles Vess to H.R. Giger is going to have stuff there. And look: Wayne Barlowe, too. Badass.

04.13.07 by Widge @ 12:45 am ![]() Kristin Hogan writes the comic Dead Squirrel Girl. When she's not doing that, she's making squid dolls, showing here. This is an obviously more inexpensive (and in most cases more portable) alternative to the other squid dolls we've mentioned before. Go pods. Categorized as: Art

04.11.07 by Widge @ 12:56 am ![]() Justine Cooper went behind the scenes at the American Museum of Natural History in New York, as its first artist-in-residence, to take pics of lots of stuff that the museum has in storage. You get everything from 19th century circus seals sitting up in the attic to a dinosaur skull just sort of hanging out on a cabinet shelf. It's the still photographic equivalent of that most excellent BBC series, Take One Museum. Check out some pics online here. Categorized as: Art

04.07.07 by Widge @ 1:49 am ![]() Sherrod Drawings offers something that the Who freaks among you might want to get framed: plans for your very own Metropolitan Police Call Box. Granted, it's not plans for a TARDIS per se, in that it's not larger inside than out, but still. You have to start somewhere. Categorized as: Art

04.03.07 by Widge @ 3:44 am ![]() One of the things I miss most about going to San Diego Comic-Con was my annual trek over to see Dave McKean's artwork on display at the ASFA booth. It was lots of lots of things that you and I could never hope to afford. So I'd go and cry and gnash my teeth for a bit, rend my garments, you know, the usual. Once I even got to meet the man himself, who was terribly nice. And I got to see some of his videos, which of course predated Mirrormask, but were all glorious. I would love to get a DVD of Dave's Greatest Hits. All of that to say, The Neil reports McKean is doing an exhibition in Rye. Wherever you can see McKean's work, do go. It's worth it. Check out this here to see some bits. Categorized as: Art
