Prufrock: Do I Dare Disturb the Universe?
Posted on 01.27.08 by Widge @ 10:00 pm

A very respectable reading of "The Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock" by Michael Gough, best known as the fourth actor to play a live action Alfred. This reading will have to do, since sadly all the Eliot readings have been pulled from online. The only versions left are really scary ones where somebody's taken a still photo of Eliot and has animated him mouthing the words. Makes The Polar Express look positively non-terrifying, I tell you.

Harry Potter Part 8: Harry Takes Manhattan

French & Saunders skewer Harry Potter

J.K. Rowling has come out and said that another Harry Potter book is not out of the question. The Daily Mail states:

But in an interview with Time magazine, which put Rowling at No 3 in its Person Of The Year list, she said: "There have been times since finishing, weak moments, when I've said 'Yeah, all right' to the eighth novel.

She states to not get too manic thinking it will star Harry. It might be something completely different.

Book is Priestly in More Ways Than One
Posted on 12.04.07 by Widge @ 1:43 pm
Book, presumably bound in human skin

Ran across this in the Telegraph, that a book bound in human skin was sold this past weekend at auction. What's unique about this book is not the whole human skin bit. As anyone who's seen Evil Dead or read this Sky News article knows, "Anthropodermic bibliopegy" is not uncommon.

What's slightly odd is that the book is about the 1605 Gunpowder Plot (yes, it's the one you're thinking of) and the person whose skin the book is supposedly bound in is Father Henry Garnet, who was killed for being involved in said plot (even though if the Wikipedia article is correct, he was only a supporting character and not really involved per se). Also, as a creepy bonus, the cover is said to have a tormented face on it if you look at it right. Here in America we're constantly finding Jesus and Elvis faces on everything from toast to billboards about pasta, so that's kinda old hat for us.

Anyway, the BBC states the book went for £5,400 in the auction. And now...I'm not a superstitious or skittish kind of person, but if I get word that anybody so much as breathes the word "Candar" around that thing, then I will be kicking somebody's ass.

The Official Nancy Drew Handbook - Book Review

The Official Nancy Drew Handbook book cover art

Written by Penny Warner
Published by Quirk Books

We grew up with the original Nancy Drew series, and while we have our reservations about newer adaptations (and some slightly less new adaptations of Carolyn Keene's books, we are delighted that the titian-haired detective is being introduced to the growing number of Younger People Than Us out there. But what we like in particular are the tongue-in-cheek homages like this fabulous book. If you've ever secretly wanted to emulate everyone's favorite girl sleuth, then The Official Nancy Drew Handbook is for you.

Even when you first lay eyes on the wonderfully retro cover, it is clear that author Penny Warner has an appreciation for Nancy's legacy. She quotes from the original books and alludes to specifics from Carolyn Keene's oeuvre throughout this guide. Lest the quick-texting girls of today get bored with Nancy's square reputation, however, Warner adds really nice touches of modernity to update the teenage detective and her advice. The guide to stocking your handbag, therefore, includes not only a handkerchief and magnifying glass, but your PDA and cell phone as well, along with some hand sanitizer. While you can still learn How to Tap Out a Morse Code Message With Your High-Heeled Shoes, assuming of course that you've been kidnapped by a bad guy (see How to Tell a Good Guy From a Bad Guy in Chapter 4 or How to Thwart a Kidnapping in Chapter 5), you also learn How to Set a Goal and Stick to It, a good skill for any young woman these days.
