Viper Spawns Black Mamba

Black Mamba logo, from Viper Comics

Viper Comics, friend to you and me, is getting into the horror business. They're launching Black Mamba Books, an imprint specializing in horror comics and graphic novels. They're talking to a bunch of folks about bringing their goods to the table. Those folks include Tony "Candyman" Todd, actress Christa Campbell and, yes, The Frog Brothers from The Lost Boys: Jamison Newlander and Corey Feldman.

The lead-off book, though, is...Attack of the Killer Tomatoes. It hits in October, and is based on the original film, so don't expect the franchise to take a Clive Barker-esque turn or anything. Although...that might be terribly amusing. Huh. Where was I?

Right. This, of course, ahead of the upcoming remake (which we've mentioned before). This Tomatoes book from Black Mamba is being scribed by Dale Mettam and with art by Erich Owen. Editing duties are handled by Greg Blohm and Joe Bauer. Sample art after the jump. For those planning to attend San Diego Comic-Con, Viper will have an advance edition of Issue 1. It's available to a "select few," which probably means you might have to offer up animal sacrifices or the like. Please check at the Viper booth for details.

Pleased To Meet You, Marvel--Hope You Guess My Name!

Stephen King's The Stand from Marvel

The first issue of Stephen King's The Stand is to hit from Marvel Comics in September. Once you cut through all the backslabbing hoobah in the press release it basically comes out that it's based on the uncut version (four color pistol sodomy!). Also, Big Love scribe Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa will adapt with Captain America artist Mike Perkins doing the art chores.

"There's nothing more interesting--and more fun--than seeing an old work take on new life in a new medium." states Stephen King. "I've enjoyed working with Marvel on The Gunslinger series, and am excited about this collaboration regarding The Stand, which will bring Stu Redman, Frannie Goldsmith, Lloyd Henreid, and Randall Flagg to a new audience."

Joe Quesada then gushed about plans to have the first Gunslinger/Wolverine crossover in first quarter 2009.

Actually, though, wouldn't it be hilarious to see Roland of Gilead crossover into so many comics that he would turn into the Logan or Punisher of our time?

No. No, on second that there's absolutely nothing funny about that idea. But you know it's been proposed.

Science Ninja Hero? Yes, Have Some.

Batman: Science Ninja Hero

Cliff Chiang has posted some of his artwork that he put together as a DC Comics/anime mashup about a decade ago. He does anime versions of Batman and Robin, Harley Quinn and The Joker, Superman, and the Justice League. Cliff sez:

Here, Batman is a wealthy but orphaned college student, the Joker is an insane visual kei rock star, and Superman is a giant robot controlled by the radio wristwatch of a young boy (the roles of Clark Kent and Lois Lane are filled in by the robot’s nerdy creator and the boy's widowed mom).

And I know it's pastiche, and I know it's thinly veiled versions of G-Force, Gigantor, and so on (Chiang mentions as much and says it would need to be reworked before it could get published for real). But I can't help but dig this stuff. How can you not want a series called Science Ninja Hero Batman? Those four words on their own are cool enough, but slap them together? Bring it!

Help Gene Colan
Posted on 05.14.08 by Widge @ 12:09 am
Gene Colan

Well, this sucks. Comics Reporter informs us that Gene Colan's liver has failed. This, as you might could figure out on your own, is Very Goddamn Bad. Colan was the artist for scads of classic comics, including Daredevil, Tomb of Dracula, and Tales of Suspense. If you've read comics, you've seen and know Colan's work. He's inescapable. And damn good.

If you want to help out, there's various ways to do so. First, they need money because you can imagine the medical costs are extensive. There's auctions running for some of his artwork to raise money.

Or if nothing else, a get well card can be sent to the address you can find at this blog. More info about Gene can be found at Mark Evanier's place.

Found via Uncle Bear. (Left off the bloody hat-tip...I blame the opiates.)

Middleman and More From Viper
Posted on 05.08.08 by Widge @ 11:04 am

Matt Keeslar is The Middleman

Viper tells us The Middleman--the ABC Family TV series based on the Chazzie-nominated comic--hits Monday, June 16th. Everyone I talk to is positively aghast that they find they have a reason to watch ABC Family. They'll get over it. The site for the show is here. The Middleblog with lots of pics is here.

Also, bear in mind that the collected Middleman is hitting soon (watch here for details) plus Viper has a ubermongo edition of Dead@17, the "Compendium," which features all that axe-wielding undead schoolgirl goodness that you love in one big book. $20? Nice. Find it here.
