Eddie Campbell's Fate of the Artist
Posted on 12.28.06 by Widge @ 6:46 pm

A little late to the party, but c'est la guerre. Eddie Campbell is an amazing artist, who happens to have been the artist on my favorite graphic novel of all time, From Hell. Even if the comments weren't turned off for the protection of everyone, I would brook no argument on this. If you have not read the book, it's back in print, so for God's sake go buy it. Or if you want it in a sweet hardcover, do not pass Go, go directly to Top Shelf and buy.

Campbell's new blog, Fate of the Artist, has a bunch of "behind the scenes" stuff for From Hell along with plenty of other bits with which to entertain yourselves. So go check it out. It's good and good for you.

The Stepford Archies
Posted on 12.21.06 by Widge @ 5:42 am

"When you buy the next issue, there will be a woman with my name and my face (sorta), but SHE WON'T BE ME!"

Man, this is terrible. They're redesigning all the Archie characters. And they're so bland and uninteresting that, if you notice, Betty and Veronica now wear B and V necklaces so you can tell them apart from the other bland and uninteresting teens around them.

Headsup: Top Shelf is Having a Sale
Posted on 10.26.06 by Widge @ 2:24 am

Top Shelf produces quality books. This is not news. What is news is that they have some of their finest quality books not only back in print but on sale--for a limited time. For the full list, you should go here. And bear in mind, Christmas is coming, right? But this sale is only on through November 8th. Here's my tips for you:

From Hell is my favorite graphic novel ever. That's right: ever. It's amazing and if all you know is that it was made into a disappointing film with Johnny Depp, then you owe it to yourself to snag it. It's back in print. Even better--they have limited copies in hardback. Alan Moore and Eddie Campbell bring you an apocalypse like no other. Get it.

Blankets, for which Craig Thompson won a Chazzie in 2003, is one of the best novels about coming of age you will ever read. Read my review here.

Anything by Alex Robinson, including Tricked, for which Alex Robinson received two 2005 Chazzie noms. Robinson creates the most painfully real people for his stories--and you know people who act and talk just like them.

The Surrogates, is one of the best sci-fi titles in recent memory, in which people stay home and let their avatars move about the real world--an excellent spin on the idea of cyberspace vs. meatspace.

Remember: November 8th. So go.

Darick Robertson Reveals: The Man Who Would Be Spider
Posted on 10.25.06 by Widge @ 2:54 am

The model for Spider Jerusalem

Uncle Warren points us to an article on Wizard, where Darick Robertson reveals not only some of the photo references he used to create the characters of Transmetropolitan, but also the 12-inch custom figures he made for the three main characters. There are many who consider these figures now the coolest toys on Earth. And rightly so.

If you haven't read Transmet, fix that now.

Failed Your Physical for the Green Lantern Corps? Here's How to Fake It
Posted on 10.13.06 by Widge @ 4:38 am
DIY Green Lantern ring

Behold this how-to for making your own Green Lantern ring. Sure, you need jeweler's wax, a tool for carving, a furnace, a buffing wheel, a...yeah, well, you probably don't have what you need to make this. But it's cool nonetheless. Especially since he made the Alan Scott, Hal Jordan and Kyle Rayner versions.

How do you know you're wearing the Kyle Rayner version? Because for a few years at least you'd find yourself getting pummeled every other month by somebody trying to steal your ring. You'd think, as you were getting your ass handed to you--again, "Man, if this was a comic, this would be boring as shit." And you know what? You'd be right.
