01.27.12 by Widge @ 8:06 pm Comments on this: nada. Add your own. ![]() It's The Fear Index by Robert Harris, read unabridged by Christian Rodska and available on CD. It's out from Random House Audio. Here's what they have to say for themselves: Dr. Alexander Hoffmann, renowned American physicist, came to Geneva fourteen years ago to work on the Large Hadron Collider. Now, Hoffmann Investment Technologies, a hedge fund he founded with British banker Hugo Quarry, is the focus of his genius. The fund is founded on the idea that "algorithms are inherently superior to human beings when it comes to playing the market." And that's especially true given the algorithms--dubbed VIXAL-4--developed by Dr. Hoffmann. If everything goes as planned, he and Quarry will soon be netting 60 million dollars a year on the billion dollars they're sure to get from their hand-picked group of ultra-wealthy investors. But what if the algorithm is more like a mind than a computer? What if it could connive as well as it can place bets on Wall Street? What if it could worm into the records of Hoffmann's hidden past and use it to destroy him, the man who gave VIXAL-4 its life-like abilities, its very life? The Fear Index answers these questions in a fiendishly smart and powerfully gripping narrative--a brilliant departure for Harris from his historical novels, and perhaps his most audacious and spellbinding novel to date.

01.26.12 by Widge @ 2:04 am Comments on this: nada. Add your own. ![]() The TV series is airing now, thus we have the John Grisham unabridged audiobook of The Firm to giveaway, read by Scott Brick. It's from Random House Audio. Here's what they have to say for themselves: One of the most talked-about thrillers of our time, THE FIRM is a compelling tale of legal intrigue, international finance, and murder. Mitchell McDeere, raised in the coal-mining region of rural Kentucky, has worked hard to get where he is: third in his class at Harvard Law. He's young. He's bright. He's ambitious. Mitch could have his pick of the big firms in New York and Chicago, but he's chosen the Memphis tax firm of Bendini, Lambert & Locke. They're selective. They pay outrageous salaries. They have a turnover rate of zero. And Mitch is about to find out why. Several events fuel Mitch's growing suspicions: two of the partners die in a suspicious diving accident off Grand Cayman; the senior partners seem unduly proud of the fact that no one has ever resigned; and security measures at the office are, even for a company with billionaire clients, more than a little extreme. Then Mitch makes an explosive discovery: the firm is owned and operated by the most powerful organized crime family in Chicago. Even as Mitch discovers the truth, he finds himself caught between the FBI, who wants an informant inside the firm, and the firm itself, which will make him a very rich man--or a very dead one.

Here's what they have to say for themselves: Fast-talking auctioneers Dan and Laura Dotson and the loyal bidders than frequent their storage unit sales are back for another DVD installment of their top-rated series with STORAGE WARS: VOLUME 2. "Storage addict" and 32-year bidding veteran Darrell and his son Brandon Sheets, secondhand store owner Jarrod Schultz and his wife Brandi, entrepreneur Dave Hester and antique collector Barry Weiss return for more high-stakes fun as they try to outbid one another in the pursuit of storage treasure. 01.21.12 by Widge @ 5:55 pm Comments on this: nada. Add your own. ![]() It's the fourth season of Meet the Browns, hitting DVD from Lionsgate. And here's what they have to say for themselves: There's always a laugh to be had when the Brown family comes home! This January, Lionsgate releases Tyler Perry's Meet the Browns: Season 4 on DVD. Actor and comedian David Mann (Tyler Perry's Madea's Big Happy Family) stars as Mr. Brown, a loveable patriarch just trying to make good on a misguided promise to his late father. Mann, the 2011 NAACP Image Award Winner for Outstanding Actor in a Comedy Series, joins Tamela Mann (Tyler Perry's Madea's Big Happy Family), Lamman Rucker (Tyler Perry's Why Did I Get Married?), Denise Boutte (Tyler Perry's Why Did I Get Married?) and Juanita Jennings (Tyler Perry's Daddy's Little Girls) in the hilarious family comedy. Tyler Perry's Meet the Browns: Season 4 is complete with 20 episodes across three discs.
Mr. Brown's "retirement home" started as a complete fluke - a result of a misunderstanding followed by a happy accident in a neighborhood full of lively and unique individuals. While Brown might not be the brightest bulb in the house, he's managed to create a combination safe haven and circus act under his "Brown Meadows" big top. The new "family" members - young and old - who now call Brown Meadows home hail from all walks of life, but more importantly, they share trials, tribulations and lots of laughter. Meeting the Browns will surely make you a part of this fun family too. Categorized as: Contests
