02.11.08 by Cosette @ 3:48 am Okay, you might be asking: Widge? Manilow? What the--? And here's all I can tell you: there's huge numbers of you guys entering our Beautiful Ballads contest. And with those kinds of numbers, you can't all tell me "Well, we're doing it for Miles Davis." Or, "Oh, I just entered for Aretha." No. There are Manilow fans among you. We're not here to judge you. We're all friends here. The caffeinated, mad sort of friends who borrow your favorite DVDs and keep them for two years, granted, and expect you to pick up the check when we go out for Krystal--but friends all the same. So if you like Manilow, I want to get you some Manilow. (Especially for those big happy numbers--woohoo!) Ahem. Sorry. We're giving away the Songs From the Seventies DVD. So, information and entry form after the break. Categorized as: Contests

02.10.08 by Widge @ 3:36 am So many people I know hardly have time to pick up a book these days. I, sadly, am one of those people. However--I am an audiobook believer. You get a good reader, you get an unabridged (hopefully) production and you are set. Trouble is, unless your local library has a good selection (and they might--check em out), audiobooks are damn expensive. This one we're giving away here is $50. Granted, if you think about it, it's 18 CDs, so that's less than $3 a disc, but still...you thought a hardback book would set you back. Oh, dear...did I say "giving away"? Yes, I damn well did. I've got two copies of Stephen King's latest novel on unabridged CD, read by John Slattery. This is from Simon & Schuster audio. The audiobook clocks in at 23 hours. So if this doesn't give you something to listen to for a few days, then you probably have one helluva commute. And did I say "Stephen King"? Hell yes. So you know you want it. And if you want it, to get it, you have to enter. And two random winners walk away with it. Categorized as: Contests

02.09.08 by Widge @ 4:32 am Ben Affleck may be saving his career by switching to directing. That's the buzz, anyway, as his directorial debut, Gone Baby Gone, has impressed the hell out of critics in a way that his Matt Murdock never could. And you know what? Good on him, dammit. Because I've always liked the guy and wanted him to get some better work in, honestly. So if you want to see what everybody's talking about, then you need to check out his brother Casey, Ed Harris, Morgan Freeman and Amy Madigan in this noir flick. Bonus bits include: commentary by Ben Affleck and the scribe Aaron Stockard plus deleted scenes with the same; an extended ending; a behind the scenes featurette; and a casting featurette. We've got three copies to give away...so if you want them, you have to enter! Proceed! Categorized as: Contests

02.06.08 by Widge @ 4:24 am Honeydripper is the new film by John Sayles and concerns rural blues from the Deep South in the 1950s. Here's what they tell us about it: The story depicts a second chance for an aging bluesman, the kickoff to a young guitar turk's career and the rise of rock 'n' roll itself. The movie features an all-star cast including Danny Glover, Charles S. Dutton, Lisa Gay Hamilton, Stacy Keach, Mary Steenburgen, Yaya DeCosta and Sean Patrick Thomas. The film is rolling out around the country now. Here's what the tell us about the soundtrack--that thing you're going to try and win: The 15-song soundtrack features Stax Records veteran Mable John ("No Matter How She Done It") along with legendary artists Memphis Slim ("Bertha May") and Lil Green ("Why Don't You Do Right?)," as well as actor Danny Glover performing "Goin' Down Slow." The film introduces actor/musician Gary Clark Jr., about whom Texas Music Magazine wrote, "Probably the most talented Texas guitarist since a certain SRV." The soundtrack showcases his fiery fretwork on "Good Rockin' Tonight," "China Doll" and "Blue Light Boogie." I've got a full track listing of the disc below the entry form. Categorized as: Contests
