08.02.06 by Widge @ 11:35 pm ![]() Since I've been known to dabble in DIY cola alchemy myself, I can relate to what these two women are going through, although I haven't taken it as far as having to worry about what sort of gum arabic I need. For more about DIY cola than you could possibly ever want to know, check out this Wikipedia article on OpenCola. Categorized as: Drinks

07.11.06 by Widge @ 11:58 pm ![]() So...Josta. We've mentioned it before, how it was near and dear to our hearts and had gotten us through many a long night drive. Many have quested for the lost drink. I'm wondering if I've stumbled onto the damn thing. So...new Brazilian place opened up in the area. Brazilian place = guarana drinks. Sweet. So I pop in every now and then and pick up several liters. They even had a yerba mate drink in cans that was really damn good, but I wound up buying every one they had and they said they're not getting anymore. Dammit. But anyway, I needed a quick pick me up. Stopped in today, grabbed a bottle of guarana drink, was walking back down the isle and...my, what is that? "Xarope de Guarana." I'm guessing that's Guarana Syrup. Shonuff. Hey, concentrated guarana with craploads of sugar? Count me in. After peeling off the English label I see beneath, in Portuguese, that you're supposed to one part of this with nine parts of water. Or whatever. So of course I did what any of you would have done. 05.03.06 by Widge @ 11:11 pm ![]() Well, we've talked up their products before, but now there's a couple of new bits you should be aware of, coming from the folks at Bally Total Fitness. We understand there are probably some people out there who are trying to cut back on sugar. I'm even doing it a little, though I'm not a big fan of artificial sweeteners. I'll go with caffeinated water, thanks. But some of you and some members of the team here want a little more taste to go along with the stimulated bang of a drink, so for you folks Bally has created a sugar-free version of their energy drink. It's got comparable oomph with the regular drink--that is, taurine, ginseng, gingko, green tea and plenty of B vitamins. And it's got sucralose (i.e. Splenda) instead of sugar. And only ten calories. The taste is different, obviously, but if you need the kick without the added poundage that sugar consumption brings and you're cool with sucralose, we say go for it. Categorized as: Drinks

04.30.06 by Widge @ 2:48 am ![]() Review: Once this thing finally hit stores, I swear I've had people asking me...and this is how the conversation starts, verbatim: "So?" As though Blak would be at the forefront of my mind. These people think they know me. Well, it probably would be at the forefront of my mind, but I went and bought a four-pack and barely finished the single one that I opened. This stuff is pretty goddamn wretched. They call it a "caffeinated fusion beverage," but all they managed to fuse together is disgust and revulsion. I imagine its creation goes something like this: take Coke. Shove something that's alive and comprised entirely of sweet plastic into the bottle. Let it die in there. Serve chilled. The reason why this doesn't work is simple: my arch-nemesis, aspartame. I can't handle anything with aspartame in it, because while it might cut down on the sugar, in return for this service, it makes everything taste like twelve miles of ass. I wish they would have come out with an unleaded version and then put aspartame in the Blak Zero version, or whatever. Because the concept behind the drink is mental, but sound nonetheless. The execution just sucks. Seriously, who in the hell is going to drink a concoction that's half Coke, half coffee and worry about freaking sugar content? Does anyone who would elect to drink this type of product strike you as the type of person who's hyper-health-conscious? If you're one of the five people who do like it, better stock up now. It's not long for this world. And good riddance.

Although that whole "one or two" limitation has got to be fixed. We assume that's a bug that will be worked out before it goes to market. Categorized as: Drinks
