This Just In: Increasing the Bally Blast Radius

Bally Blast Sugar-Free Energy Drink

Well, we've talked up their products before, but now there's a couple of new bits you should be aware of, coming from the folks at Bally Total Fitness.

We understand there are probably some people out there who are trying to cut back on sugar. I'm even doing it a little, though I'm not a big fan of artificial sweeteners. I'll go with caffeinated water, thanks. But some of you and some members of the team here want a little more taste to go along with the stimulated bang of a drink, so for you folks Bally has created a sugar-free version of their energy drink. It's got comparable oomph with the regular drink--that is, taurine, ginseng, gingko, green tea and plenty of B vitamins. And it's got sucralose (i.e. Splenda) instead of sugar. And only ten calories. The taste is different, obviously, but if you need the kick without the added poundage that sugar consumption brings and you're cool with sucralose, we say go for it.

Coca-Cola Blak - Drink Review

Coca-Cola Blak

Review: Once this thing finally hit stores, I swear I've had people asking me...and this is how the conversation starts, verbatim: "So?" As though Blak would be at the forefront of my mind. These people think they know me.

Well, it probably would be at the forefront of my mind, but I went and bought a four-pack and barely finished the single one that I opened. This stuff is pretty goddamn wretched. They call it a "caffeinated fusion beverage," but all they managed to fuse together is disgust and revulsion.

I imagine its creation goes something like this: take Coke. Shove something that's alive and comprised entirely of sweet plastic into the bottle. Let it die in there. Serve chilled.

The reason why this doesn't work is simple: my arch-nemesis, aspartame. I can't handle anything with aspartame in it, because while it might cut down on the sugar, in return for this service, it makes everything taste like twelve miles of ass. I wish they would have come out with an unleaded version and then put aspartame in the Blak Zero version, or whatever. Because the concept behind the drink is mental, but sound nonetheless. The execution just sucks. Seriously, who in the hell is going to drink a concoction that's half Coke, half coffee and worry about freaking sugar content? Does anyone who would elect to drink this type of product strike you as the type of person who's hyper-health-conscious?

If you're one of the five people who do like it, better stock up now. It's not long for this world. And good riddance.

Roll Your Own Beverage!
Posted on 03.26.06 by Widge @ 9:10 pm

We find this write-up on Yenra.com to be faaaascinating:

Programmable Beverage Containers : Surface buttons on bottles release colors, flavors, fragrances, and one or two doses of caffeine

Although that whole "one or two" limitation has got to be fixed. We assume that's a bug that will be worked out before it goes to market.

Drink Review: Wired X294
Posted on 10.08.05 by Widge @ 2:22 am

Review: It takes a lot to really get my attention when it comes to caffeinated beverages. I mean I've consumed more caffeine so far in my lifetime than most people will during their entire span. I am a caffeine achiever.

But when you come out and boast that you've got a drink that has 294mg of caffeine in it, you definitely have my attention. Let me put that in perspective for those of you who don't, like I do, have Energy Fiend's caffeine database committed to memory. It's basically twice what's in a 16 oz. can of Rockstar. Twice your normal cup of coffee. More than twice what's in a Full Throttle. Three times what's in your usual shot of espresso. Almost four times what's in a Red Bull. And more than eight times what's in a can of Coke.

Besides caffeine it also sports 3000mg of Taurine, 160% and 500% of your daily recommended allowance of B12 and B6, respectively.

Gleukos: Cutting Out the Middle Man for Stimulation
Posted on 09.13.05 by Widge @ 1:51 am

Well, this sounds fascinating. Picked this up from Energy Fiend: Gleukos is a new energy drink that skips the part where your body breaks the sugar down and instead it's formulated to go straight to your bloodstream and muscles. So it's supposed to be instant energy. Press release is here. And their website is here.

And if that's not enough, they're going to make powder available so you can mix your own. Ka-razy.

Of course, the teasing bastards are selling them exclusively at 7-11 stores. And Coast City has none. So stay tuned. We will find some of this stuff.
