Red Bull Cola Features Cocaine, Is Partially Banned, And Is No Threat

Red Bull Cola

Widge's Note: Ladies, gents, boys and girls, please welcome guest columnist and German correspondent Dom to the mix.

By now, most of you out there have heard about the banning "scandal" of Red Bull Cola (reviewed here by Widge) here in Germany. Let me try to shed some light and share my thoughts on this.

Here a rough summary of what happened through the eye of the naïve consumer: a laboratory in Germany registered some amount of cocaine in Red Bull's cola and a lot of states of our Federal Republic reacted by immediately banning it from the stores. Others did not.

The amount of cocaine was so small (0,4 microgram per litre), that some states declared -- rightly so -- that it bears no risk. In fact, according to a Bavarian state institution, to have an effect on you, a dosage needs to be as big as 25 to 50 milligrams. To put this into perspective, you would need to drink tens of thousands of litres.

This Krispy Kreme Milkshake Will Kill You If It Can
Posted on 04.25.09 by Widge @ 12:44 am
Krispy Kreme milkshake from Flip

That's right, Mr. Walls. I have been sent to keel you.

So after spending some time with the giant squid we decided to stop by Flip on the way home. Flip is a "burger boutique" here in Atlanta that we keep hearing people go on and on about so we decided to see what the shot was.

The shot first of all is that the menu is mental. An array of beef burger variations (one would let you use imported Japanese kobe beef with foie gras on top of it--$35) is there and then a bunch of other non-beef burgers like a chorizo spicy pork sausage or a turkey burger. But no, that's not why I felt compelled to tell you about this place. I had to tell you that I flirted with death today. And death took the form of what you see there in the pic: Flip's Krispy Kreme milkshake.

Granted, they had a foie gras milkshake as well (no lie) but I have an aversion to the concept of foie gras. Yes, say what you want about the ducks in question (I did have black bean and duck chili for a starter) but I don't even get to that point because I just want to point out that's eating an animal's liver. Do you know what the liver is for? Ahem. Anyway.

I asked about this Krispy Kreme milkshake because I am fascinated by things that would be considered an affront to both God and man. And the waitress told me it was two Krispy Kreme doughnuts stuck in a blender with the makings of a vanilla milkshake.

Pepsi Throwback Actually a Step Forward
Posted on 03.08.09 by Widge @ 5:00 am

Pepsi Natural Pepsi Throwback Mountain Dew Throwback

Well, I'm glad somebody is bloody well listening to me. Somewhat. Even though it's Pepsi and not Coke, although as I mentioned before--Coke waited too long and they got too expensive, so I broke my addiction with them. But anyway, Pepsi is launching three new drinks this month and next: Pepsi Natural, Pepsi Throwback and Mountain Dew Throwback. The trick? They're all sweetened with real sugar instead of high fructose corn syrup. So...excellent.

Pepsi Natural reminds me of Red Bull Cola. Here's its story: water, natural sugar, natural caramel extract, natural apple extract and kola nut extract. It hits first in Chicago, Cleveland, Pittsburgh, Los Angeles, San Diego, San Francisco, Seattle, Portland, Las Vegas and New York. I'd love to hear an opinion from somebody who grabs one of these.

Cult Energy Drink - 27 Second Review
Posted on 03.02.09 by Widge @ 9:26 pm
Cult Energy Drink

Full Name: Cult Energy Activator Energy Drink
Country of Origin: Austria
Ingredients of Note: Actual sugar, guarana extract, Panax ginseng extract

Total Caffeine Content: Unlisted/unknown.

The "maximum content of guarana caffeine and ginseng" is a bit odd because...what exactly is the maximum? Is there a maximum amount you can safely give somebody in one 8.4 fl oz. can? I hope this wasn't it, because the buzz I got off of this was minimal. Granted, I have a caffeine tolerance comparable to that of most extinct megafauna, but still.

And speaking of the can, seeing as how it is in a can like this, you'd think that it might end up tasting like most other energy drinks on the market.

And...you'd be right.

Time: 23 seconds.

Full Throttle Coffee Drinks - Review
Posted on 02.27.09 by Widge @ 5:37 am
Full Throttle Coffee

There are some wonderful things in the world. Lots of them, in fact. And when they get together, generally, it's cause for celebration. That's why I feel helplessly drawn to anything that uses both "coffee" and "energy beverage" to describe itself. Hence, when I saw Full Throttle had a new Coffee line of drinks, I was all over it. I snagged a sample of all three flavors: dulce de leche/caramel, mocha and vanilla. In theory, it should be a match made in heaven. Skim milk, so it's not too fattening (we don't want to think about this too much--bear in mind I drank all three of these damn things). Real sugar. All three come with ginseng, guarana extract, and 200% of your RDA for both B6 and niacin.

So what's the result? Odd. First, they're incredibly sweet tasting. To the point where you keep checking: this is sugar, right? Then you lay down on top of that the respective flavoring for the three variations and that is the second taste you're hit with. And those two things are overwhelming to the point where I honestly couldn't tell you if the coffee bit was any good or not. It's like the coffee is an afterthought.
