This Just In: Sugary Drinks Can Make You Fat

Baskin Robbins Heath Shake

I'm a little alarmed that we've gotten so collectively dim that we have to have Men's Health telling us that eating a Baskin Robbins Large 32oz. Heath Bar milkshake might be a leading cause of somebody getting rather large. As though this were news. The very words "Heath Bar milkshake" give you 60 calories, and since I've typed it twice so far, I'm well and truly fucked for this post.

(And I'm not sure who I'm saying is collectively dim--is it men due to the fact it's in Men's Health? Not certain.)

Anyway, they've put together a list of drinks that more than likely are contributing to your waistline if you're drinking them. It's a good idea to watch your sugar intake anyway. Notice I said watch as in be aware, not necessarily cut back on it--if you're cool with what you're drinking, then rock on. But if you're concerned about being large--as I am--I'm sick of being "the Great Ebon Whale"--then sugary drinks might be a place to look. In addition to their Drink This Not That feature (which is rather helpful if you are aware that the drinks are too sugary and you want alternatives), I would suggest learning to drink your coffee black. I did. Also, if you're more concerned about buzz than sugar, then caffeinated water is always a nice alternative. Or Foosh.

Wet Mango Exotic Energy Drink - Review
Posted on 06.03.08 by Widge @ 3:14 am
Wet Mango Exotic Energy Drink

So what's the selling point of the Wet Mango Exotic Energy Drink, apart from the...ahm...rather provocative can art there? Well, the name's accurate--it's mango flavored. In fact, that's what differentiates it from every other energy drink out there...since you can taste a regular energy drink underneath that. The mango taste is nice from the standpoint that it is different from every other energy drink on the market, but only just. Not that I expect any huge breakthroughs in energy drink taste (since taste for most of us is secondary to the oomph provided), mind you.

The one thing I would change would be to have the mango flavor be a real mango flavor. As it stands, the ingredient is listed as "Artificial Flavor 'Mango'," with the quotes around "Mango" being a little off-putting. You'd think that would be an enhanced selling point as well: "with all natural mango flavor." Or something.

Also, oomph provided was no more than I would get from a similarly sized can energy drink. So again, if you just want a slightly different taste, Wet Mango might work for you.

Matte Leão + Guaraná and Leão Guaraná Power - Drink Review

Matte Leão + Guarana and Leão Guarana Power

Guarana is busting out all over in the States, but before it became par for the course for energy drinks to have it in their ingredients list, guarana was in drinks coming out of Brazil. It was at a Brazilian grocery store (as in one that sells Brazilian stuff--I have sadly not snuck away to Brazil recently) that I came across these two by Matte Leão. I don't speak Portuguese and these bottles came with very little English on them, so if I make assumptions and get it wrong, don't mock me too viciously.

First up, I tried the Matte Leão + Guarana. From what I could taste, we're talking mate tea plus guarana. And my reading of the ingredients list seems to support that. And real sugar, so that's good. I don't believe there's fake sugar in here, although it could be on the ingredients list and how would I know? The guarana-laced tea taste was very interesting, especially since it seemed to have a bit of caramel in there as well, and it had a bit of a kick to it. The yerba mate plus guarana combo was a nice one.

Rockstar Roasted Mocha - Drink Review

Rockstar Roasted Mocha

There's very little I can say about this. Amazingly, there's sucralose in this but I can't taste it. So that's saying something. However, you can slap as many "Coffee & Energy" and "Premium Blended" and "Cream & Coffee" and whatnot you want on the can. It can have ginseng and gingko biloba and guarana and milk thistle, even.

But that doesn't stop this from tasting like every single other mocha coffee drink, canned or bottled, that's out there right now. As far as the caffeine content goes, it's 240mg for the entire can per the thing's ingredients. But that's a drop in the ocean for me. So buzzwise, it might do you. But tastewise, it won't thrill.

Coke, I Hope You're Happy
Posted on 04.27.08 by Widge @ 4:28 pm

Coke from South America

That's right. You still haven't offered up Coca-Cola Prime like I told you to. And this year you apparently didn't make enough kosher Coke because I couldn't find any in the wild during the whole of Passover. So look what you made me do. You made buy some imported Coke just to get a taste of Coke without high fructose corn syrup. You silly bastards. I hope you're happy. You're lucky Pepsi tastes like stale Coke, otherwise I'd switch to Pepsi Raw and leave you behind.

Heartless bastards.
