G33k B33r - Drink Review

G33k B33r by Bawls

Okay, so the fact that Bawls decided to launch a caffeinated root beer on April 1st gave me pause…and just because you're paranoid doesn't mean they're not out to get you. But sure enough, it exists.

I was expecting one of two things. Either something with a distinct bite or edge to it or something where you could definitely tell you're drinking a caffeinated root beer. Those of you who partake of a lot of caffeinated bits will know what I mean: you can literally taste the caffeine. (The most pronounced I've ever tasted it personally is in one of XTZ's 250mg chocolates…it's like caffeine with a slight chocolate aftertaste.)

Instead what I got was a pleasant, mild, smooth root beer. Surprisingly so. I kept waiting for there to be some taste of something that would clue me into the fact I was drinking a caffeinated root beer and…nope, nothing. No weird aftertaste at all.

Unfortunately, there's not a lot of details I can go into, since "smooth root beer" pretty much sums it up. But I will say that I found my bottles at a local Micro Center. And even then, you had to look behind all the regular Bawls to find it. Why they don't have a sign up by the cash register that promotes the stuff, I have no idea. So if you don't find it at yours, ask. Or of course, you can order it from ThinkGeek.

Chick-Fil-A's Coffee Caramel Milkshake - Drink Review
Posted on 04.06.08 by Widge @ 10:07 pm
Chick-Fil-A

As threatened, I went and snagged one of Chick-Fil-A's coffee caramel milkshakes. All for the benefit of reviewing one and in the name of science, naturally.

And here's the devastating news: they're actually pretty damn good. So good that I've had to spend the latter part of last week fighting off the urge to go get another just to "double check" myself.

While I realize that these things might probably vary a bit from location to location, the one that I got had the coffee taste under the caramel. The caramel was the dominant flavor. And this worked. In fact, if you aren't fans of the taste of coffee, I'd say try one of these because the coffee taste doesn't yell out its presence. I kept trying to see if there was some weird aftertaste like you get with some sweet drinks, but there wasn't. I thought it was consistent from end to end.

In fact, I was trying to figure out what it reminded me of, and it finally struck me: Bailey's Shakes from Häagen-Dazs. I assume Häagen-Dazs still sells those--I won't allow myself to walk back into that shop.

So the verdict is: yes, have some.

Free Idea: Rockstar Energy Drink Ad Campaign
Posted on 04.06.08 by Widge @ 9:42 pm
Rockstar Energy Drink logo

Okay, so sometimes I think of things that I can't possibly use and nobody seems to know how I get paid for having thoughts like this, so here you go: free idea for whoever and I get this out of my head.

I started thinking about an ad campaign for Rockstar Energy Drink, distributed in some areas by Coca-Cola. A series of five 60-second internet commercials that either appear as video ads or you stick them on YouTube and try to get them viral. They tell an ongoing story about the P.S.I., the Party Scene Investigation squad. They are a group of stiff, very serious government agent types are constantly one step behind another group of party goers, who are having a good time acting up and living life to the fullest--fueled of course by Rockstar Energy Drinks of various flavors.

With the PSI's involvement they're treating the scene of each party like a crime scene. Using detectors to look for remnants of Rockstar, or empty cans, like a strange cross between Men in Black and CSI.

At the end of the series, it's revealed that a well-known rock star (which in my head is Steve Tyler of Aerosmith--we'd have to have a Revolution X joke in there somewhere) is behind the PSI, trying to stop the party. Because after all, if anybody can party like a rock star, what’s the point in actually being a rock star?

First commercial follows and is not formatted properly as a script would be because Wordpress works hell on tabs.

Red Bull Has a Cola

Red Bull Cola

Okay, so here's something interesting: Red Bull is known for their energy drink. And for being what Uncle Warren has running through his veins. But now they're branching out: they're introducing a cola. But not just any cola. A natural cola.

According to the bit on their website, the cola will have nary a bit of phosphoric acid, preservatives or artificial flavors. 100% natural, they say, with flavors "derived from both the Kola nut and Coca leaf, ingredients in the original colas." It gets its caffeine from coffee beans. Fascinating.

I'll get my hands on one and let you know about it as soon as I can. Unfortunately, we have received confirmation that the cans do not have a bluish glow around them as pictured. Too bad.

Geeks and Beer: A Love Story

Monty Python

The Unique Geek are following up our Caffeine Appreciation Month with Geek Beer Month. They have declared it and thus it is so.

They explain their rationale for each entry. For example, for Rogue Chocolate Stout, "What Makes Is It Geek?: There is a girl on the bottle, it's made with imported chocolate, and it is bottled by a company named Rogue." Fair enough.

See the ongoing coverage here.
