A Knight's Tale (Superbit, 2001) - DVD Review

A Knight

Film:
DVD:

Written & Directed by: Brian Helgeland
Starring: Heath Ledger, Rufus Sewell, Paul Bettany, Mark Addy, Shannyn Sossamon

Released by: Columbia-Tristar
Region: 1
Rating: PG-13
Anamorphic: Yes

My Advice: Borrow it.

William Thatcher (Ledger) is, at least in his time period, a nobody. You see, he wants to joust (and since I'm talking about the actual sport rather than the video game with flying ostriches, you suddenly see the time period) but only those of noble birth can do so. When the knight he's working for suddenly drops dead, he and his fellow attendants (Addy and Alan Tudyk) are desperate. They haven't eaten, bathed or much of anything else pleasant for several days due to lack of funds. So in order to lay claim to some coin, William has to step up, put on the armor, and pose as an actual knight. That's when he starts to get ideas...

Robinson Crusoe (2001) - DVD Review
Posted on 12.07.03 by Doc @ 2:15 am

Film:
DVD:

Written by: Christopher Lofton, Tracy Keenan Wynn, Christopher Canaan, based on the novel by Daniel Defoe
Directed by: Rod Hardy and George Miller
Starring: Pierce Brosnan and William Takaku

Features:

  • Theatrical trailer

Released by: Buena Vista
Region: 1
Rating: PG-13
Anamorphic: 1.85:1 widescreen (enhanced for 16x9 TVs)

My Advice: Pass.

When I pulled this little gem out of my latest shipment from Needcoffee HQ, I spent several minutes stomping around the house and saying really uncharitable things about Widgett and his family line unto the tenth generation. Then, after a short break to catch my breath, I repeated the process with Pierce Brosnan as the target of my ire. Once more for Buena Vista Home Video, and I was done. Pierce Brosnan? Robinson-frickin'-Crusoe? What fresh hell was this? But, because I'm that kind of guy, I hurled myself on this cinematic hand grenade to save the rest of you. You'd best be thankful.

Cat People (1982) - DVD Review

Cat People (1982) DVD cover art

Film:
DVD:

Directed by Paul Schrader
Written by Alan Ormsby, based on the story by Dewitt Bodden
Starring Nastassja Kinski, Malcolm McDowell, John Heard, Annette O'Toole, Ruby Dee

Features:

  • Running audio commentary with director Schrader
  • Cat People: An Intimate Portrait by Schrader
  • On the set interview with Schrader
  • Special Makeup Effects featurette by Tom Burman
  • Production Notes and Photos
  • Theatrical Trailer

Anamorphic: Yes.
My Advice: Borrow it.

Making the Beast with Two Backs takes on a whole new meaning in Cat People. Sex is a huge part of the story, overshadowing the horror or suspense in the movie. Orphan Irena (Kinski) travels to New Orleans to meet her newly discovered brother Paul (). Irena is shocked when he tells her that they are were-leopards that transform into beasts when having sex with non-were-leopards and can only change back after killing someone. Considering she is able to leap fifteen feet into a tree, she shouldn't be all that surprised. That Paul wants to get it on with his sister appalled her, since she has the hots for Oliver (Heard), a curator at a zoo where Paul had temporary lodging... and of course there's that whole incest taboo. What's a girl to do?
