05.09.10 by Wolven @ 7:08 pm ![]() So, quite some time ago Tuffley told me that Alan Moore (Promethea, Lost Girls, Swamp Thing, The Voice of the Fire, Snakes and Ladders, self-professed conceptual magician, author, comics creator, playwright, crazed bearded man of the Northampton woods) would be teaming up with Damon Albarn (Blur, several soundtracks you love, including the one for Ravenous) and Jamie Hewlett (Tank Girl)--the two finely diseased minds behind Gorillaz. They are getting together for the purposes of creating an opera about the life of Dr. John Dee (Secret Servant to Queen Elizabeth I, transcriber of the Enochian Letters, first 007). Apparently, he wasn't just blowing smoke in order to get my hopes up and then dash them mercilessly to the ground. So we have Albarn, who is himself a compositional genius, Hewlett, who is possessed of an artistic style which may indicate that he is simply possessed, and Moore, the auteur who has declared himself a magician--and a liar--in the same breath. This is going to be fantastic. Categorized as: Headsup

The Royal Shakespeare Company has filmed their new production of Hamlet. Starring David Tennant and Patrick Stewart, this stellar piece has been receiving loads of well-deserved accolades. Shakespeare done well is always worth watching, and this production is amazingly fresh and exciting even for folks like us who have seen umpteen versions of the play. Categorized as: Headsup

05.02.10 by Widge @ 10:35 pm ![]() Even old as I am, I still miss the notion of Saturday morning cartoons. Kids just don't understand the pleasure of waking up early on Saturdays to plop down eagerly in front of showsthat you could only catch once a week, but we remember. Although it is pretty badass to be able to find a slew of cartoons online on demand or snag them on DVD. But still. I contend somebody should start the Saturday Morning Cartoon Channel, that shows cartoons straight through till golf starts, then it fades out and begins another block of goodness. 04.04.10 by Widge @ 4:34 am ![]() Like most geeks, you've probably pondered the question: what if stop motion genius Ray Harryhausen had conceived of Night of the Living Dead instead of George Romero*? Well, your friends at SEIBEI (home of the Intramural Zombie Hunter League t-shirt) didn't just ponder the question: they've answered it. With a t-shirt. A limited edition t-shirt. And it's black. Do I really need to say anything else? When this sucker is gone, it will be solid gone. Find it and more goodness here. *--Geek disclosure: yes, we know that Return of the Living Dead and John Russo started the whole brains thing and not Romero. But that's just not as good a reference. No offense to Mr. Russo. Categorized as: Headsup

03.29.10 by ScottC @ 12:23 pm Yes again Threadless presents a couple of gems that are so perfect for a couple of Needcoffee staffers, it's a little creepy. 03.13.10 by Widge @ 4:58 am ![]() Of course, the alternate title I had in mind for this post was "If Dindrane had created The Sopranos," and before that it was "A Planet of the Apes remake that would have been worth a damn," so you can sorta see where I was going with this. Regardless, the new Threadless shirt Monkey Business by Alex Solis is rather tasty. The design's a little large for my tastes, but I just love the detail of the scar over one eye. That and the fact it's black, of course. Solis we've mentioned before, with his fantastic "Dreams" shirt. You can find more of his stuff at his official site, and of course plenty of t-shirts to snag at Threadless. Categorized as: Headsup

03.01.10 by ScottC @ 3:47 pm Yes again Threadless presents a couple of gems that are so perfect for a couple of Needcoffee staffers, it's a little creepy. This one is for our Ministers of Music Tuffley and Rob Levy. I like how it conveys the broad range of their tastes. However, they haven't given their Ministerial stamp of approval of this shirt yet. They want to examine the actual shirt in greater detail (hint hint). ![]() [[ Another shirt this way... ]] Categorized as: Headsup

02.20.10 by Widge @ 4:07 pm So this one has been up for a few weeks and I had meant to post about it when it first appeared--but even now I feel I must bring this to anyone's attention that missed it, because it's certainly impressed us here. The name of the shirt is AW3SOM3 F1GHT!!1! and, as you might have already registered, it features a knight in armor with sword fighting a dinosaur in armor with a laser mounted on said armor. However, the awesome part of the equation is that the bloody thing is all ASCII art style. And if you don't know what that means, you can either ask your parents or click on the link or, perhaps best option--do both. Certainly there have been other recent new ones that cranked our tractors, like Arcade Expressionism or the Rox-friendly Space and Time, or even the Dindranest shirt in a while, Bubbles the Snow Leopard. You can click through any of the links to check them out for yourself, or just go to their front page. Tell them we said hi. Categorized as: Headsup and Shirts

01.18.10 by Widge @ 1:16 am There's a lot of stuff that materializes in the world. Some of it is your friend. Some of it is cool. But how much of it is worth buying? And for whom? We attempt to help you unravel the mysteries. And anything you purchase through our Amazon links here give us kickbacks, so we thank you advance.
So East Meets Watts was the first of the two live shows that Cinematic Titanic performed here in Atlanta. And my understanding is that they hit us early in their run, so they had plenty of time to polish it before recording their life performance for this DVD. And even better than the Titanic team going after the film, it does a good job of capturing the live performance: whereas on the "normal" Titanic DVDs you get the silhouettes, here you get to see facial expressions and reactions. So it really is the next best thing to actually being there. While we highly recommend you go catch them live, this will do in a pinch. Go snag it from their official store. Categorized as: Headsup

01.03.10 by Widge @ 10:51 pm ![]() In 2005, Alex Ferrari and Jorge F. Rodriguez put out Broken, an indie short that featured a decent portion of the RDA you have for splode. We did a full review of the film here. It's pretty damn keen for something that got made with just $8K and now you can check it out for yourself. The official site is here and you can snag a copy of the full thing on DVD (with plenty of features) here. I would be totally on board a full-blown feature of this. Categorized as: Headsup
