01.18.10 by Widge @ 1:16 am There's a lot of stuff that materializes in the world. Some of it is your friend. Some of it is cool. But how much of it is worth buying? And for whom? We attempt to help you unravel the mysteries. And anything you purchase through our Amazon links here give us kickbacks, so we thank you advance.
So East Meets Watts was the first of the two live shows that Cinematic Titanic performed here in Atlanta. And my understanding is that they hit us early in their run, so they had plenty of time to polish it before recording their life performance for this DVD. And even better than the Titanic team going after the film, it does a good job of capturing the live performance: whereas on the "normal" Titanic DVDs you get the silhouettes, here you get to see facial expressions and reactions. So it really is the next best thing to actually being there. While we highly recommend you go catch them live, this will do in a pinch. Go snag it from their official store. Categorized as: Headsup

01.03.10 by Widge @ 10:51 pm ![]() In 2005, Alex Ferrari and Jorge F. Rodriguez put out Broken, an indie short that featured a decent portion of the RDA you have for splode. We did a full review of the film here. It's pretty damn keen for something that got made with just $8K and now you can check it out for yourself. The official site is here and you can snag a copy of the full thing on DVD (with plenty of features) here. I would be totally on board a full-blown feature of this. Categorized as: Headsup

01.03.10 by Widge @ 6:18 am While I wear pretty much nothing but black clothing, I would not consider myself goth, nor did I ever think of myself as somebody who would wear a lot of black clothing with skulls on it. Not this Xmas, but the one prior, I got two skull T-shirts from my in-laws. Which made me wonder if they were trying to tell me something--or if there was some kind of commentary happening on my personality. Or it may have been the fact that one said "Death Before Decaf" on it. Or perhaps they saw me wearing one of my Evolution NYC t-shirts and thought it suited me. Regardless, I find myself drawn to yet another skull t-shirt, this one the "Lights Out" pictured from Threadless. So maybe they were completely right about me. Who can say? What I can say is that Threadless' $10 holiday sale is drawing to a close Monday morning. You've got until 10am CST/11am EST. And you know I like to tell you about deals. Not only is all their stuff on sale, but there's also new stuff, like the Cosette-approved "It's Toile About You." Which, funnily enough, is by Emmy Cicierega, sister of my arch nemesis Neil. There's also the brilliant alternate history shirt, "Twenty If By Giant Robot." So snag the deals while you can. Tell them we said hi as well. Categorized as: Headsup

12.31.09 by Widge @ 3:11 am ![]() So Dom sent this over as a potential Monday Morning Mental Sorbet, but I don't think it's strange enough. Sure, it starts off very disturbing, but once you get into the actual gameplay it's actually pretty cute and ingenious. Two things also occurred to me while watching this: 1. If you let the family dog get a hold of the critter, it would be an immensely damaging thing to the critter/controller...but if it happened while the game was on, it would look pretty damn impressive. 2. Finally, a gaming console controller I can successfully comprehend and use. I've been looking around trying to find a date when it will hit shelves but nothing thus far. Categorized as: Headsup

12.22.09 by Widge @ 4:48 am There's a few things we know about here at Needcoffee.com, especially when it comes to our readers. The first is that you're busy people. You have lives. You are going ninety-to-nothing a lot. So you have a tendency to forget things...you know, like gifts for people in your life. It's not that they're not important to you, it's that your brain is addled by modern life. (Even if that's not the case, trust us, go with it--you'll get sympathy instead of blame.) So it's never too late to present you with a holiday guide. And the other thing we know is that our readers are, for the most part, big kids. So throwing out a bunch of Disney stuff is perfect for you mad caffeinated weasels. So here we go. And we'd like to point out, if you like something you see here and purchase it through Amazon via this site, we get kickbacks. And that helps pay for things, like, you know, the server. And bandwidth. And coffee to keep us typing. Thanks. ![]() First up is the very impressive Up DVD/Blu-Ray Combo Edition, which would be awesome just on its own. But we're talking about the set that comes with a Collectible Luxo Jr. desk lamp as well as a base where you can stash your Disney Blu-Ray discs. Yes, the lamp lights up. Yes, it's adjustable. So that's nice. I'm a bit miffed that it only runs off of four AA batteries, but so be it. I assume the addition of an AC option would have made the set more pricey than it already is, but still, it would have been nice. And yes, I know this is mainly for decoration and gee-whiz rather than, you know, actual serious illumination. But still. The base's space to display your Blu-Ray discs is adjustable so it will allow for just as many as you own. It looks like it will hold up to seven Blu-Ray discs, possibly eight. (Sorry, I didn't feel like yanking out the Blu-Rays so I could experiment.) So that's the limited edition collectible part of the equation and a true Pixar nut (like myself) will dig it. 12.18.09 by ScottC @ 6:26 pm ![]() Many former industrial centers are suffering in this economy. Places like Detroit and Flint, Michigan are searching to redefine themselves with the exporting of jobs and Moneygeddon™ decimating their industrial base. Many towns and cities are pursuing tourist dollars to revive their economies. So they host some sort of food festival, state fair, or a seasonal celebration. Our favorite perfumer, Black Phoenix Alchemy Lab, has recently went into partnership with one of these towns and their famous winter festival. So on Needcoffee, we thought we would feature this celebration. Yes, we're talking about Innsmouth, Massachusetts and the Miskatonic Valley Yuletide Faire. Categorized as: Headsup

12.14.09 by ScottC @ 4:23 pm Yes again Threadless presents a couple of gems that are so perfect from a couple of Needcoffee staffers, it's a little creepy. This one is for Widge. And I think we all know why. ![]() [[ Orca Got An Upgrade ]] Categorized as: Headsup

12.10.09 by Widge @ 4:43 am ![]() Silence! The Musical is going to London for its European premiere. Yes, that's the brilliant musical version of Silence of the Lambs with songs written by Jon and Al Kaplan--it features the show-stopping favorite of mine, "Put the Fucking Lotion in the Basket." It starts up January 19th and will play through February 28th. And this is interesting: "The London production will feature additional numbers especially written for the U.K." And coming up...an awesome Lego video someone made of my aforementioned favorite track: Categorized as: Headsup

12.09.09 by Widge @ 1:07 am So we've picked a few titles from the EMI/Capitol holiday line-up to tell you about. You might recognize them already if you follow everything we do on here, seeing as how we're giving away a copy of each. You can find that in our Contest section. Anyway, we go from the normal and standard increasingly towards the slightly off-kilter. And let's admit something, shall we? Our families aren't looking over our shoulders, so we can just level with each other. Holiday music can get really, really damn annoying. So use it sparingly, okay? And so with that, we begin.
First up, Nat King Cole and The Christmas Song. None can argue with Cole...his voice is one of the smoothest out there, and while I wouldn't want to be listening to this album in, say, July, Cole can make even the most tired carol sound pretty damn sweet. And you get the standards on here, including the 1961 version of the title track (it's the one that starts "Chestnuts roasting on an open fire..."--yeah, I know, could you get a more generic can't-remember-the-title tune?) and then the version with Nat and Natalie Cole. So here's the thing: this isn't the first time these songs have been released. In fact, this isn't the first time an album of this title has been released...but the track listing has been fiddled with. It's all good stuff, but if you already own a version of Nat's Christmas hits, especially a remastered one, then not sure why you would need to snag this one. But hey, if you don't own it already, it's Nat King Cole. So. What can you do? (Click here to buy it from Amazon.) Categorized as: Headsup

Okay, so there was an attempt to relaunch the Terminator franchise with Salvation, starring a shouty Christian Bale and up-and-coming Sam Worthington. I say "attempt" because Halcyon, the folks who made this, are working to sell off the rights to both this film and the potential fifth one. Which means the much talked about new trilogy will more than likely never happen. But regardless, while watching the theatrical cut you can be joined by director McG, who pops up in picture-in-picture to host an array of info about the film, including storyboard comparisons and more. There's also a director's cut on a separate disc. There are featurettes regarding the film and the motorcycle company Ducati and a behind-the-scenes featurette. And the thing looks good thanks to the hi-def Blu-Ray format. And, while they didn't send me a DVD of the film, it looks like the Director's Cut is only available on the Blu-Ray edition. So should you buy it? Good question. Like I said, without the Director's Cut, it seems sort of silly to pick up the DVD based on what I know. So that leaves us with the Blu-Ray, if you have an appropriate player. I would say that if you really dug the film enough and have the setup at home to warrant catching it on hi-def, then for $15.99 (what it's priced as I type this), that's probably reasonable. I only say that because with the auction for the rights coming, this might be the best version we see for a while. So take that for what it's worth. (Click here to buy it from Amazon.)
