Olivia To Become (Even More) Animated
Posted on 05.29.08 by Widge @ 3:18 pm
Olivia sings all your favorites

It's no secret that we love Ian Falconer's Olivia series. Starring a young pig and her family, her adventures have included searching out her missing toy, saving a circus from disaster, and going to bed. They are some of the best children's books we've read in ages and we snag each new one as it becomes available.

So it is with a mixture of damnable hope and trepidation that we heard Nickelodeon's getting an animated 3-D CGI Olivia series in 1Q2009. Twenty-six half-hour episodes are planned. Why 3-D CGI? It was Olivia creator Ian Falconer's idea, says Chorion, the media content company that's working with Nickelodeon on the project.

In keeping with Olivia's stellar publishing history, books will be featured prominently in the upcoming consumer products roll out. The Simon Spotlight and Simon Scribbles imprints of Simon and Schuster will be developing a robust television tie-in program with a myriad of formats, from storybooks to novelty and coloring books set to launch in late 2009. Olivia's imagination leads the way in this new series which aims to foster the sense of make-believe and play that every preschooler has. The show will encourage children to be creative and to think beyond the scope of everyday parameters, instilling a sense that with a strong imagination, there are endless possibilities for any great idea. Mostly the show, like this character, celebrates a spunky, confident personality who is always wondering 'what if?'

Here's a tip for Nickelodeon and Chorion and everybody else: make it a show for preschoolers that parents will want to watch and you've got a winner on your hands. There's a trick to making a cartoon watchable by multiple generations. Adults dig the inclusion of a Pollock painting out of the blue as well as the expressions on the parents' faces as they're dealing with life with Olivia. It's word of mouth from adults that's made this a franchise--so don't blow it.

Pimp My Mixer!

Pimp my Mixer!

Okay, full disclosure first: We don't actually have a KitchenAid mixer here in the Technocave (nor in its attached compound). They are wonderous things, however, and I almost one to rush out and buy one because I'm inspired. Inspired to PIMP A MIXER!!

FlameKA.com makes artisan bread, and felt that the mixers they were using were just too ordinary and needed some pizazz. Thus, the flame mixer decals were born. You can buy their flame decals (and others, including roses, chili peppers, butterflies, and my favorite, one that makes your mixer look like a shark bomber from WWII) here. They also have a gallery of other pimped-out mixers, including Joel Cory's shown above here.

Threadless: Elephants on Trapezes and Divers With Knives

Threadless: Incredible Circus

As much as I dig a guy in a diver's helmet fighting off some sort of oceanic apparition with a knife, I think the prize for this week goes to "Incredible Circus," because how can you not dig an elephant and a monkey doing a trapeze act with that much confidence?

Headsup: Pixar Two-Disc Editions For $13
Posted on 05.26.08 by Widge @ 12:35 am
John Lasseter from A Bug's Life

Just stumbled across this, thanks to The Bargainist: Pixar two-disc editions are on sale on Amazon for $13 each. That's Finding Nemo, Bug's Life, Incredibles and Monsters Inc..

Now, the 10th Anniversary Toy Story 1 and the two-disc Toy Story 2 are included, but if you really want to buy Toy Story then I would say go for the Ultimate Toy Box edition, which is being sold by other sellers on Amazon, though out of print, for as low as $20. It is sweet.

Further now: you might be asking, "Widge, do I really want to spend $20 (used, $23 new) for an Ultimate Toy Box set when eventually I'm going to get an Ultimate Ultimate Toy Box Set after Toy Story 3 hits?" And you might be wise in asking that. I would say if you're a Pixar fiend (like me) it's worth it. Besides, bear in mind a new ubermongo set for the trilogy won't be out until probably 2011, since we've got the theatrical release, then the initial release on DVD, THEN the ubermongo. So I figure $20 between here and 2011? And the fact that Dixar may not have the sense by then to include all the original Toy Box bonus bits? I would play it safe.

Anyway, since so many people seemed to take advantage of the Python sale, we thought we'd pass this along. Sale is here.

Headsup: Sinatra, Dylan and Rowlf

Sinatra DVD Cover Art
Bob Dylan 1978-1989: Both Ends of the Rainbow DVD Cover Art

Sinatra is the 1992 miniseries that covers the life of Frank from his childhood all the way up to 1974. Not too shabby for four hours of content. So yes, it doesn't delve into things perhaps as much as it could have, but again, it can be forgiven and seen as an overview. Philip Casnoff plays the man himself. Warner Brothers has put this out in a two-disc set. No bonus features. Fans of Sinatra or the miniseries will want to own this, because this is probably the best edition you're going to see for a while, if ever. (Click here to buy it from Amazon.)

Bob Dylan apparently "found Jesus" in 1978. That's where Both Sides of the Rainbow starts in, where Bob was shunting aside his previous songs and embracing Christianity with fervor. Then he entered into the 80s and a period which a lot of fans found depressing, only feeling better about Bob with Oh Mercy's release in 1989. So that's the timeline for the documentary, which takes an in-depth look at this period in the artist's life. It comes with "The Dylan Gospel Interviews," in which Dylan talks about his faith--comes with commentary by Derek Barker. Fans of the artist might want to at least rent this to know more about this portion of his career. I was busy listening to his old stuff during this time period, so I myself escaped unscathed. (Click here to buy it from Amazon.)

You Think This Letter On My Head Stands for Disco?

Technics vs. Marvel: DJ Captain America

Fat Buddha is selling t-shirts that are mashups between Technics and Marvel Comics. The result? An idea that seems like it might be lame, like DJ Iron Man, DJ Wolverine or DJ Human Torch...just seems to work. Perhaps it's because these t-shirts are cooler than anything else coming out of the former House of Ideas, now known, as discussed previously, as the Shack of Shite.

A Hitch In The Raising Of A Evil Genius
Posted on 05.19.08 by ScottC @ 2:15 pm

Let me say this up front, this is not my fault.

Some of you may have seen clothing from Revobaby that celebrates the Proletaritot Movement. Revobaby outfits your little freedom fighter with revolutionary slogans so they can show solidarity with the movement. Well, there is more to this Proletaritot Movement than just cool t-shirts for your rugrat.

OK, you remember Joseph, the future Evil Genius. Well, he's entered the Terrible Twos. I'm sure all you parents remember how your charming little bundle of joy turn into a creator of temper tantrums of epic proportions. Well, when young Evil Geniuses hit this stage in development, it's a bit... different.

Again, I have to say, this was not my fault. I did not give Joseph a copy of Das Kapital. So you can not blame me that the junior Science Villain has become a Political Science Villain.

Tapestry the Legacy Edition by Carole King CD Cover Art
Sudden Impact soundtrack CD cover art

Sony Legacy has released one of their nifty Legacy Editions of Carole King's Tapestry. These editions always have bonus bits on them that usually make them worth snagging, even if you have the original already--and that's what I'm here to do is to let you know what's what. This has the original album, just as it was remastered previously, but with a second disc featuring songs from the album performed live with just Carole and the piano from 1973 and 1976. These performances haven't been released before, so if you're a King fan, you're going to want this. If you want to try it out, skip to the bottom of this post and I'll have the MP3 samples from Amazon so you can try before you buy. But it's a classic album with a worthy re-release in my opinion. (Click here to buy it from Amazon.)

So, Lalo Schifrin. He's one of those composers who you know, even if you don't know them. This is the guy who brought you the badass soundtrack for Bullitt, the score for Enter the Dragon, the theme to Mission: Impossible and scads more. He's got 194 items listed with a composer credit on the IMDB. Not bad. He's also the composer for Dirty Harry, having started with the franchise at the beginning in 1971. And this 1983 film, Sudden Impact, was the fourth in the series. I believe this is the first time it's officially hit CD and it's out from Aleph Records. If you're a big fan of Schifrin's work or of Dirty Harry, you'll want to consider picking this up. (Click here to buy it from Amazon.)
