07.07.05 by Widge @ 12:29 am Some of Buena Vista's latest, folks. Check it out. ![]() Bride & Prejudice. So it's a semi-Bollywood version of Jane Austen. It's not like the book hasn't been made into big and little screen versions before...why should you care? Well, Gurinder Chadha, director of Bend It Like Beckham is behind this one. And, if we must simply appeal to your baser instincts, then I will simply tell you that Aishwarya Rai is the star. Who, you ask? Former Miss World. Who, you ask still? Okay, fine. Here. Now, for those of you who haven't fled to go buy this thing, I'll mention that there's an audio commentary with Chadha and her co-writer, a making-of featurette, deleted scenes, extended songs, and a convo with the stars. Streeted 7/5. ![]() Prozac Nation. This release is an interesting one, at least to me, because of its cover. I find this to be a study in what you're trying to stress about your film, in order to drive sales. To me, this cover says, "We got Christina Ricci nekkid! Come on in!" Either that or, "Massage therapy can be time consuming." I dunno. Anyway, Ricci plays a chemically imbalanced young writer winds up at Harvard on a scholarship, things should be looking up. But instead, she's becoming steadily unhinged and more and more depressed. Comes with a Sundance "Anatomy of a Scene" bit. Streeted 7/5. ![]() The Woodlanders. This is an adaptation of the novel by Thomas Hardy, which, to our knowledge, was not written as part of a competitive sporting event. In a nutshell, Emily Woof plays a young woman who thinks she's better than the guy she's had a thing for since she was a kid. Said guy is played by Rufus Sewell. She decides to travel abroad, get married, and then realizes she screwed up royally. I'm sure it's a laugh riot. Streeted 6/28. Categorized as: DVD and Headsup

07.05.05 by Widge @ 11:16 pm ![]() It's not streeting until next week, but we've got it here now and here's the rundown. This set is five discs, and all eight episodes from the final season are here. The boxed set is no slouch, just like the other ones in the series that have hit from Anchor Bay. The first and final episode come with audio commentary, and three others come with cast and crew interviews. There's a photo gallery, wrap party footage, an FX featurette, a behind-the-scenes featurette for the final episode, alternate and unused titles, and the fifth disc is all CD-ROM. This last bit comes with the Hercules Chronicles, bios for cast and crew, trivia for the series and mythology info. If you dig the series, then your mouth-watering may now commence. 07.02.05 by Widge @ 4:43 am ![]() After I discovered UNKLE through their first album, Psyence Fiction, and realized I dug the living hell out of them, it was natural to go look for more of the same. DJ Shadow was where I stopped first, seeing as how he's half of UNKLE, and this album was no slouch. And not just because the man makes excellent use of samples from the movie Prince of Darkness. Check out "The Number Song" and see if you don't think it kicks ass. This "Deluxe Edition" comes with a second disc, filled with fourteen various alternate versions, remixes, unreleased tracks and live bits. A lot of reissues don't warrant a re-purchase, but in this case I'm saying go for it. This hit last month from Island Records. Categorized as: Headsup and Music

06.29.05 by Widge @ 10:52 pm ![]() ![]() Remember when Star Wars didn't suck? Yeah, we do too. We are filled with nostalgia for the good old days as we present these two things which just came in off the truck: the Millennium Falcon and an X-Wing Fighter, both models from RC Ertl. I was never good with models as a kid. I couldn't color in between the lines and...well, Christ, have you seen my handwriting? I sign a credit card slip and somebody asks, "You a doctor?" Anyway, suffice to say I screwed up enough models to know that that sort of pastime simply wasn't my bag. But these look simple enough where even a shmoe like me could handle them. The X-Wing comes with a nice thing on the box that says "Easy! Beginner!" Now you're speaking my language. They're both "moderate" level and the X-Wing is "Snapfast" style, which means the Falcon is probably out of my league. But hey, if you like some hands-on work, go for them. Crying over them while you watch your bootleg copy of ROTSith probably is bad for your concentration, though. Categorized as: Headsup and Toys

06.28.05 by Widge @ 5:01 am ![]() ![]() ![]() Oh yes, we've got DC any way you want it: old school, new school and very new school. For the new school, there's the modern animated classic, the original Timm/Dini Batman: The Animated Series, with its third volume. The final twenty-eight episodes are here (three of which come with commentaries from the creators) across four discs. There's also a featurette on Batgirl. For the very new school, there's the new Batman animated series, here with three episodes in a first volume called Training for Power. This comes with a featurette and a game that unlocks an exclusive feature. Then...old school. Super Friends, baby. The second season has sixteen episodes to offer on two discs. Two featurettes are included, which sound terrifying: "The Ballad of Zan & Jayna" and "Pajama-Rama Super Friends Retrospective." Huh? Buy them from Amazon... Categorized as: DVD and Headsup
