The only thing better than an album is an album with bonus features. We're suckers for bonus features. And here, Columbia/Legacy will smack out on June 14th (June 20th in the UK, apparently) a new two-disc version of Janis Joplin's Pearl. You get the original ten tracks, including "Me and Bobby McGee" and "Get It While You Can," plus six bonus tracks. The second disc is the real bonus fun, though, with live tracks from Joplin's tour in Canada. In addition to the previously released and mind-destroying "Ball and Chain" and six other live bits (which I believe were on a previous not-quite-as-special release of the album), you get six additional unreleased live tracks. Ah, we love us some Janis. Nobody screeches holes in the sky like she does.

Got kids? Need some discs to keep them under control? Okay. We got you covered...

The Adventures of Pete & Pete: Season 1. One of the quirkier shows for kids out there, this Nickelodeon title struck a chord with a lot of folks. It started out as one-minute shorts, then graduated to specials and then finally a series. On this Paramount set, you get the first eight episodes, plus four specials, and a couple of shorts. All this on two discs. There's audio commentary on two episodes and a special, and a music station of seven songs from the series. If nothing else, this is worth checking out to see what series could attract Michael Stipe, Steve Buscemi and Hunter S. Thompson to make appearances. Streeted 5/17. (US)(UK)(CAN)

Clarissa Explains It All: Season 1. This Nickelodeon series marked the arrival of Melissa Joan Hart on the small screen and all thirteen first season episodes are here on two discs. Basically, it's the story of Hart's character, a junior high student, and her family. And all the hijinks that come along with being that age and rambunctious and energetic, a concept that wears me out just typing it out here. Anyway, it's good for kids of that same age, or for bigger kids if you're just feeling nostalgic. This Paramount set comes with only some Nick TV spots from that era of the network along with Hart's segment from Cribs, a show from MTV. Streeted 5/17. (US)(UK)(CAN)

Pooh's Heffalump Movie. The latest Pooh movie hit cinemas and managed to make its money back worldwide...I'm sure this DVD release will be the icing on the cake. Still, it's short, the Messages are billboard-sized and your kids already like Pooh, so this Disney release can't be faulted too much. Single digit kids will dig the hell out of it. And once you've got it home, there's the ability to sing along with the songs, a hide and seek game, what amounts to a making-of featurette, and some DVD-ROM stuff: coloring pages and a recipe. Streeted 5/24. (US)(UK)(CAN)

Racing Stripes. Well, if your kid likes animals (and I don't know any kid that doesn't), this movie might work for them. It's especially designed for kids in the single digit range, and the farther you get away from that the more it will probably make you want to tear your hair out. Still, it's hard to get too upset with a film that has tolerance among its messages. Too bad it delivers it with a mallet like we've already seen this batch. A cute mallet, yes, but still...a mallet. Anyway, this Warner Brothers release comes with an alternate ending, outtakes, a featurette on making the animals talk, deleted scenes, a game, and a director's commentary. See the official site. Streeted 5/10. (US)(UK)(CAN)

DVD Headsup: TV Sets

Want some TV boxed action? Of course you do.

ER: The Complete Third Season. You know, there's plenty of shows that have outstayed their welcome on television. And it saddens me every time I see an ad on TV for this week's "special episode of ER." It's become a soap opera so bad that even soap stars are like, "Eh. Right." However, thanks to Warner Home Video, you can get the early years, back before it started to suck so bad that not even light could escape. This third season set comes with all twenty-two episodes across six discs, deleted scenes, a gag reel, a featurette centered around the nurses, a featurette on the episode "Fear of Flying," and more. Check out the official site. Streeted 4/26. (US)(UK)(CAN)

Fat Actress: The Complete First Season. Say what you want about Kirstie Alley. But it takes some balls to face up to what's essentially been a parade of tabloid publicity, come to terms with what they're on about, and then turn that into a TV series on Showtime. And no, the new Britney reality TV show doesn't count. For anything. Here, Alley's playing a fictional version of herself trying to make it in Hollywood after having put on a few extra pounds. The series has guest appearances by a slew of folks and comes, with all seven episodes, on a two-disc set. You also get set footage, footage from the premiere party, deleted scenes, and audio commentary on the first four episodes. Streeted 5/24. (US)(CAN)

The Waltons: The Complete Second Season Richard Thomas, who will remain John Boy Walton until the day he dies, heads up the cast in this set from Warner Video, which tells the continuing story of his life growing up with the family during the Depression. This set contains all twenty-four episodes from season number two across five discs. It includes the Emmy-winning episode "The Thanksgiving Story," as well. There's also guest stars like Sissey Spacek, Wilford Brimley, John Ritter and Ron Howard. Streeted 4/26. (US)(UK)(CAN)

DVD Headsup: New Anime

New anime? Sure. Here ya go.

Appleseed. Some genres of film just cry out for gumbo. This Geneon release is a perfect example, since anime wants to get bigger and bolder and wilder. Well, okay, not every slice of anime, but the crazed mega-scifi contingent is game. You know what I'm saying. Here you get post-apocalyptic notions, clones, guns, mecha, cyborgs, guns, and a badass soldier chick who's the star. It's the military vs. the government for the Appleseed technology with our heroes caught in the middle. Oh, and guns. Love it! Comes with a director and producer commentary, music and scene cues and staff profiles. Streeted 5/10. (US)(CAN)

Elfen Lied, Vol. 1: The First Vector. Proving yet again that no good deed goes unpunished, two students find a woman washed up on a beach. Well, scratch that, she's not a woman technically, she's a diclonius. Is that bad? Well, yes, because those are mutants that are here to replace mankind. Oh, and she's got a split personality. And...um, she can screw with matter. So that's...pretty damn bad. And of course, with that setup, what is there to say, but "hijinks ensue." This ADV release comes with the first four episodes, clean opening and closing animation, along with character and production artwork. Streeted 5/17. (US)(CAN)

Full Metal Panic FUMOFFU, Vol. 1: Full Metal Pandemonium. Let's see...one version of this release has girls in bikinis and the other has girls in school uniforms. Wonder what demographic they're going for. Hmmm. Anyway, this second series comes back with more action and comedy, as a likeable but militaristic whackjob tries to keep a high school safe from...oh, terrible things like love letters and watermelons. Long story. Anyway, this ADV release comes with three episodes, a featurette, clean opening and closing animation, original Japanese TV spots, character artwork and a board game. Streeted 5/10.
