05.26.05 by Widge @ 5:40 am Want some TV boxed action? Of course you do. ![]() ER: The Complete Third Season. You know, there's plenty of shows that have outstayed their welcome on television. And it saddens me every time I see an ad on TV for this week's "special episode of ER." It's become a soap opera so bad that even soap stars are like, "Eh. Right." However, thanks to Warner Home Video, you can get the early years, back before it started to suck so bad that not even light could escape. This third season set comes with all twenty-two episodes across six discs, deleted scenes, a gag reel, a featurette centered around the nurses, a featurette on the episode "Fear of Flying," and more. Check out the official site. Streeted 4/26. (US)(UK)(CAN) ![]() Fat Actress: The Complete First Season. Say what you want about Kirstie Alley. But it takes some balls to face up to what's essentially been a parade of tabloid publicity, come to terms with what they're on about, and then turn that into a TV series on Showtime. And no, the new Britney reality TV show doesn't count. For anything. Here, Alley's playing a fictional version of herself trying to make it in Hollywood after having put on a few extra pounds. The series has guest appearances by a slew of folks and comes, with all seven episodes, on a two-disc set. You also get set footage, footage from the premiere party, deleted scenes, and audio commentary on the first four episodes. Streeted 5/24. (US)(CAN) ![]() The Waltons: The Complete Second Season Richard Thomas, who will remain John Boy Walton until the day he dies, heads up the cast in this set from Warner Video, which tells the continuing story of his life growing up with the family during the Depression. This set contains all twenty-four episodes from season number two across five discs. It includes the Emmy-winning episode "The Thanksgiving Story," as well. There's also guest stars like Sissey Spacek, Wilford Brimley, John Ritter and Ron Howard. Streeted 4/26. (US)(UK)(CAN) Categorized as: DVD and Headsup

05.19.05 by Widge @ 12:54 am New anime? Sure. Here ya go. ![]() Appleseed. Some genres of film just cry out for gumbo. This Geneon release is a perfect example, since anime wants to get bigger and bolder and wilder. Well, okay, not every slice of anime, but the crazed mega-scifi contingent is game. You know what I'm saying. Here you get post-apocalyptic notions, clones, guns, mecha, cyborgs, guns, and a badass soldier chick who's the star. It's the military vs. the government for the Appleseed technology with our heroes caught in the middle. Oh, and guns. Love it! Comes with a director and producer commentary, music and scene cues and staff profiles. Streeted 5/10. (US)(CAN) ![]() Elfen Lied, Vol. 1: The First Vector. Proving yet again that no good deed goes unpunished, two students find a woman washed up on a beach. Well, scratch that, she's not a woman technically, she's a diclonius. Is that bad? Well, yes, because those are mutants that are here to replace mankind. Oh, and she's got a split personality. And...um, she can screw with matter. So that's...pretty damn bad. And of course, with that setup, what is there to say, but "hijinks ensue." This ADV release comes with the first four episodes, clean opening and closing animation, along with character and production artwork. Streeted 5/17. (US)(CAN) ![]() Full Metal Panic FUMOFFU, Vol. 1: Full Metal Pandemonium. Let's see...one version of this release has girls in bikinis and the other has girls in school uniforms. Wonder what demographic they're going for. Hmmm. Anyway, this second series comes back with more action and comedy, as a likeable but militaristic whackjob tries to keep a high school safe from...oh, terrible things like love letters and watermelons. Long story. Anyway, this ADV release comes with three episodes, a featurette, clean opening and closing animation, original Japanese TV spots, character artwork and a board game. Streeted 5/10. 05.12.05 by Widge @ 11:44 pm ![]() A couple of TV titles that hit this week: In Living Color: Season Three. From Fox, the further adventures of The Army of Wayans and their many comrades in arms, including David Alan Grier, Jim Carrey, Jamie Foxx, and more. Twenty-eight episodes are here on three double-sided discs. Which means more of Fire Marshall Bill, Homey, Wanda, and of course...Men on Film. If you're a fan of the show, you're going to want to grab this. The third year was probably their best. No features. (US) (CAN) ![]() Quantum Leap: The Complete Third Season. Universal throws all twenty-two episodes of the third season at you in this set, spread across three discs. There's no features, but you do get to see Scott Bakula do a bunch of embarrassing things, getting ready to really embarrass himself in Star Trek lo those many years later. Here you get the episodes where Sam is a beauty paegant contestant, a black man in love with a white woman in 1965, a guy about to be executed and a pregnant teen. No features, but now that Bakula has some time freed up maybe we can hope for some later. (US) (CAN) Categorized as: DVD and Headsup

05.10.05 by Widge @ 4:28 am Three releases to point you to for Paramount this week: Bad Apple. Well, we're Law & Order junkies, so anything with Chris Noth in it is going to get our attention. Besides Sex and the City, of course. This TV movie had Noth as an executive producer as well as playing the lead, an undercover FBI agent who manages to get involved with the sister of his informant. It's a decent cop flick, with some nice actors behind it: Colm Meaney, Mercedes Ruehl, Robert Patrick, and Elliott Gould. No features. (US) (CAN) Joan of Arcadia: The First Season. This series has been getting a lot of attention, and not just the Touched By An Angel goody-goody-has-God-in-it-so-it-must-be-good type. Amber Tamblyn stars as a teenager who gets tasks given to her by God. Not sometimes-mistaken-for-Jack-Kirby's-Highfather God, but by folks who claim to be God. I know what you're thinking: it's Wonderfalls meets Highway to Heaven! Well, kinda. Anyway, this series also has Joe Mantegna, Mary Steenburgen and Jason Ritter among the cast. The six-disc set comes with deleted scenes, cast and crew commentaries, and three behind-the-scenes featurettes. (US)(CAN) The Longest Yard. The best football movie ever, in my opinion. And I'm not a sports guy. But "I think I broke his fucking neck!" is priceless and there is no need to debate. There is a need, however, to be afraid of he upcoming sequel. Therefore, take comfort in this new "Lockdown Edition," which comes with an audio commentary by Burt Reynolds and scribe Albert S. Ruddy along with two featurettes and a look at the aforementioned remake. We're not even counting the British soccer version. (US)(CAN) Categorized as: DVD and Headsup

05.04.05 by Widge @ 4:56 pm ![]() Well, remember when we were talking about the evil Parents Television Council and their lovely little survey? Well, finally, the JLA to their Legion of Doom has arrived, or so it seems. Or so it has the potential to become. Jeff Jarvis pointed out (and has endorsed, him and a bunch of others) TV Watch. They're going to counter the PTC's efforts to sanitize and lobotomize television in the U.S. Check out their mission statement:
Sounds like a winner to me. I've signed their petition, and urge our reader in the U.S. to do the same. Categorized as: Headsup and TV
