The Aristocats Special Edition DVD Cover Art

Becoming Jane DVD Cover Art

The Aristocats is back in a special edition, and while it's not one of Disney's full-on Platinum Editions, it has a little bit to warrant it. A little, anyway. Mostly, the transfer is updated and looks a lot better than the previous release. But beyond that, there's just bits and pieces that would interest us, since most kids find DVD player games about as interesting as a shoe that they can't see. You get a deleted song, four minutes with the Brothers Sherman talking about the songs from the film (four minutes!), a gallery, and then two other pieces that are included because they have cats in them. First, a bit from the Disneyland series with Walt talking about cat history and the short "Bath Day" which has Figaro the cat in it. And that's it. No commentary. Granted, this isn't ranked up there with a Snow White or a Sleeping Beauty, but at least give us something. Ideally, Disney needs to start selling DVDs that appeal to both adults and children--like their classic films do. Put the hardcore Criterion-esque stuff on one disc, put the kid-friendly stuff on the second disc. I can solve problems like this--my rates are very reasonable. Anyway, if you don't already own this, it's worth having just for the film and the new transfer, especially if you have kids. (Click here to buy it from Amazon.)

Philip Pullman Writing "John Blake" Comic
Posted on 02.22.08 by Widge @ 1:27 am
Philip Pullman

David Fickling Books, an imprint of Random House, has announced the "DFC," a new weekly comic for youngsters that's beginning in May of this year. We're going to go way out on a limb and postulate that "DFC" might stand for "David Fickling Comics." Call us crazy.

"For today's children it is almost a brand new form of entertainment. Only completely original material will be published in the DFC. No advertising, just 100% storytelling delight. Joy in an envelope," says Fickling. And yes, if you were around to hear David Lloyd at DragonCon last year, there's a very good reason that for British children comics are "brand new."

Anyway, the first writer to be announced to be participating in this is Philip Pullman, author of The Golden Compass, which had the working title of The Father, The Thing-That-Could-Be-a-Watch and the Very Big Bear. He's writing "The Adventures of John Blake," of which nothing else is known other than it will rock balls, until the final issue, which will make you so angry you'll want to punch kittens.

The DFC's website is here, and it looks like it will open in less than seventeen days from the time I write this.

Headsup: We Love Lucy And Several Audiobooks

I Love Lucy: The Complete Series DVD cover art

First up, a boxed set that fills me with untold amounts of glee. It's I Love Lucy. And if you don't love Lucy, then I highly recommend ECT as soon as possible, because you've got some serious issues. And did I say it was all of Lucy? Because it is. Thirty-four freaking discs of the entirety of the run. Nine seasons. Close to 200 episodes. Now, some people are going to get upset because they bought all the season releases only to find this huge set from Paramount with all of that and a bag of chips--and they are now devoid of chips. But those people are probably surprised when the sun goes down each night as well. The new special features on this set include the I Love Lucy: The Movie with never before seen scenes, I Love Lucy at the 1954 Emmys, highlights of the 1949 first joint television appearance of Lucy and Desi, and more. My favorite bit is that they've recreated an episode of I Love Lucy that was broadcast in color but the color version wasn't extant--so based on color photos, they've gotten the episode colorized to match what it would have looked like had you seen the episode at the time--nifty. Make no mistake, it's not cheap--Amazon lists it as $190 as I write this--but it's worth every penny. (Click here to buy it from Amazon.)

Greedy Brits Keep All the Pepsi Raw For Themselves
Posted on 02.18.08 by Widge @ 7:44 pm

Pepsi Raw in the UK

Well, that's disappointing. As we mentioned last year: cane sugar Pepsi, aka Pepsi Raw, was in the works. We were excited about this not because we're Pepsi fans. No, Pepsi tastes like stale Coke. Although it's not as bad as RC, which tastes like stale Pepsi. No, we wanted this because it might encourage Coke, who we've been yelling at for a while about doing a cane sugar version themselves (Coca-Cola Prime! Do it).

Now, we learn that Raw has been rolled out...exclusively to the Brits. And it's even more of an interesting remix than we first thought:

The WGA Strike: Is the Nightmare Over?
Posted on 02.11.08 by JM Tuffley @ 3:42 pm

Is Our TV Coming Back?It appears to be just about a done deal--as the Writers Guild of America have theoretically come to terms with the AMPTP (AKA: the major studios and producers). The agreed upon terms are coming to a vote to the union at large on Tuesday. That means if the union votes the new settlement in, the writers would go back to work on Wednesday.

But, dear reader, what does this mean for you? Will Scrubs get a proper finale? When is 24 coming back? And will I finally post something about a television show that doesn't air in the UK?

Some of your answers are coming after the break....

English Drunkie Wins 5 Grammys
Posted on 02.11.08 by Rob Levy @ 12:00 pm
Amy Winehouse

Sometimes it's hard to keep a bad girl down. Such was the case Sunday night with the Grammys.

Banned in the USA, nominee Amy Winehouse was forced to keep it together long enough to perform "You Know I’m No Good" and watch the Grammys from London, bloody early in the UK morning, via satellite.

But staying up late is not a problem for the tabloid soulstress who scored five Grammy wins including wins for record of the year, best new artist, song of the year, best pop vocal album and female best pop vocal performance. Fortunately "being flat out crazy" was not a Grammy category.

The story is the stuff that critics oogle for: an artist in rehab singing about not going to rehab. However Winehouse had the last laugh on Sunday night.

Winehouse's night was the stuff of epic dramas. As the press wondered if she would go crazy, rip on anyone or even stand up straight, Winehouse rose above the fray and even got her mum involved in the act. In the end, Winehouse's in-person no show worked to her advantage because her handlers could control every aspect of her performance and acceptance speeches without worrying if she would vomit on the person sitting next to her or tripping on her way to the stage to collected her schwag.

Morally they knew she was no good, but critically she was golden.
