02.11.08 by Rob Levy @ 12:00 pm ![]() Sometimes it's hard to keep a bad girl down. Such was the case Sunday night with the Grammys. Banned in the USA, nominee Amy Winehouse was forced to keep it together long enough to perform "You Know I’m No Good" and watch the Grammys from London, bloody early in the UK morning, via satellite. But staying up late is not a problem for the tabloid soulstress who scored five Grammy wins including wins for record of the year, best new artist, song of the year, best pop vocal album and female best pop vocal performance. Fortunately "being flat out crazy" was not a Grammy category. The story is the stuff that critics oogle for: an artist in rehab singing about not going to rehab. However Winehouse had the last laugh on Sunday night. Winehouse's night was the stuff of epic dramas. As the press wondered if she would go crazy, rip on anyone or even stand up straight, Winehouse rose above the fray and even got her mum involved in the act. In the end, Winehouse's in-person no show worked to her advantage because her handlers could control every aspect of her performance and acceptance speeches without worrying if she would vomit on the person sitting next to her or tripping on her way to the stage to collected her schwag. Morally they knew she was no good, but critically she was golden. Categorized as: Headsup

02.10.08 by Widge @ 12:27 am ![]() Neil Gaiman (whom we just mentioned...funny that) has celebrated the seventh birthday of his blog by announcing he (and publisher Harper Collins) will place one of his books online for free for a month (initially, anyway). The voting for which one takes place over the next week, so get to it. The titles in question are: American Gods, Anansi Boys, Coraline, Fragile Things, M is for Magic, Neverwhere, Smoke and Mirrors, and Stardust. Rough choice. On one hand I say Coraline because it's the perfect scary book for kids and adults. On the other hand, I dig Neverwhere for the urban fantasy. And on the hand I borrowed from someone else (or maybe a Tom Lehrer song), there's Stardust, which is a much better book than it is a film...and it was a decent film. So...you're on your own. But make sure and vote, whatever your choice. Categorized as: Headsup

02.09.08 by Widge @ 11:44 pm ![]() Seems like it's a day for awards and such. The WGA Awards have been announced, and the big winners are Diablo Cody, who won Best Original Screenplay for Juno, the Brothers Coen who adapted No Country For Old Men from the novel by Cormac McCarthy (timely mention, huh?). In television, The Wire won for Dramatic Series and 30 Rock won for Comedy. The Sopranos took the award for Episodic Drama and The Office won for Comedy. "Episodic Drama" and "Episodic Comedy" appear to mean "single episode." They can't simply call it that because that would be too easy. The Simpsons won for Animation, and The Colbert Report won best Comedy/Variety Series. For the full list of winners, check out the WGA's website. I hope by writing this up, I'm not being a scab or anything. Please don't break my knees. I like my knees. They protect me from Cher. Categorized as: Headsup

02.06.08 by Widge @ 11:18 pm ![]() You know, we've been tracking the inevitable slide towards Skynet for a long time now, but we never thought that the invasion would come from so innocent a quarter as t-shirts. But it's happened. Enter My Robot Overlord, creating robot-themed t-shirts about the futility of resistance. Each shirt has a story behind it, each purchase is a vain attempt to stave off the rise of the machines, and each person that works for them just another cog in a satanic wheel of clothing. Or...something. They'd look even better in black, guys. Ahem. Found via Fantastic Blognanza. Update: That's right. Skynet: anticipated since 1922. Categorized as: Headsup

02.06.08 by Widge @ 12:10 am ![]() Energy Fiend alerts us that Cocaine Energy Drink, formerly smacked into calling itself No Name, has returned. Not only have they smoothed out their differences with the FDA (which got them smacked to begin with) but now they come in a "Cut" formulation (that's missing the burn) and a "Free" version that's lacking in sugar. The Redux folks (yes, they did Brawndo) were nice enough to send us a couple of cans back in the day, and as we mentioned at the time, it was kind of interesting. A nice buzz for a little while (which equals a helluva buzz for normal humans) and the burn was at least something different amongst all the other energy drinks out there. So we're glad they're back. Eight Simple Rules – The First Season. Paul Hennessy (Ritter) is facing a situation many dads are facing these days, working from home and dealing with the children on a regular basis. While his wife Cate (Sagal) is at the hospital, Paul has to deal with his three teenagers: Bridget, the cute one (Kaley Cuoco); Kerry, the smart one (Amy Davidson); and Rory, the Boy (Martin Spanjers). So Paul must balance connecting and relating to his kids while ensuring they don't do anything stupid as they tend to do. I know, this sounds like the typical family sitcom. However, how many sitcoms are actually on the TV schedule? Also, you have the late great John Ritter and Katey Sagal, so that raises the bar a few notches. This bitter sweet season comes with a blooper reel. Click here to buy it from Amazon. Categorized as: Headsup

02.03.08 by Widge @ 4:26 pm ![]() Lisa Snellings-Clark, mistress of cute poppets and duchess of morbid whimsy, has a sale on. As you can see from the pink skull poppets shown here, there's stuff that's just right for Valentine's Day, but you better move your ass, because that's right around the corner. Lurking. With a cleaver. Categorized as: Headsup

02.03.08 by Widge @ 3:25 pm ![]() Yes, apparently there's a new Ambush Bug series coming. I've called for this for years now, but the fact that it's actually happening fills me with dread. I mean, with the DCU as it stands right now, Ken and I are convinced that it's going to be revealed that it wasn't Dr. Light, it was really the Bug! And if you don't know what that means, then you're better off not knowing. I wish I didn't know. Anyway, for those who want to relive some of the fun of Ambush Bug, or if you don't know what the hell it's all about, Again With the Comics has posted some choice pages from issue #3. Although my personal favorite is #2 where he fought a giant killer koala bear. NIKNAK! Categorized as: Headsup
