James Cameron's "Avatar," Fourteen Years in the Making

James Cameron from Your Studio and You

When I started at Corona's Coming Attractions, around 1997 or so, there were a number of pages that predated me getting there. One was Cameron's Avatar. And before the site went away, that page was one of the most convoluted that we had: it was project-lives, project-is-dead over and over and over again. From 1996 to 2000. One of the most amusing things for me is that the bit about this being Cameron's follow-up to Titanic turned out to be accurate. Of course he's been busy filming at the bottom of the ocean and playing amateur archaeology sponsor for fake relics, but hey, the man can have his hobbies.

Now I know I try to break down a lot of news for you, but this Hollywood Reporter article you really just need to go read for yourself. This movie sounds like it might be the cure for the Robert Zemeckis CG Zombie Blues. Check out this taste:

Good News: Morgan Freeman Going To Be Okay
Posted on 08.04.08 by Widge @ 8:01 pm
Morgan Freeman

Morgan Freeman's publicist released the following and since I've seen everything from "serious condition" (although broken bones to me is serious enough, no doubt) to a YouTube RIP memorial for the guy by somebody trying to be first to post one, I thought I would share. Bottom line: he's going to be all right.

Regarding Morgan's injuries - "Morgan has a broken arm, elbow and has minor shoulder damage but was in good spirits when I spoke with him a short time ago at the Elvis Presley Memorial Trauma Center at The MED, a Level 1 Trauma Center at the Regional Medical Center at Memphis.

He is having a little bit of surgery this afternoon or tomorrow to help correct the damage. He says he'll be OK and is looking forward to a full recovery."

Folks are welcome to send well wishes - no flowers or gifts - to:
PO Box 16548, Encino, CA 91416 in care of Morgan Freeman
Or they can blog him at: http://www.planitnow.org/morgan/

Your Dark Knight vs. Mummy 3 Box Office Wrap Up Report...
Posted on 08.03.08 by Widge @ 9:18 pm

Batman vs. The Mummy for Hostess

It was payback time from their previous battle, but Mummy came up short. Even at $42.5M estimated take couldn't stop The Dark Knight's utter and complete thrashing of the box office, which came in with an estimate of $43.8M.

But can we please stop saying that The Dark Knight could be the number one grossing film of all time? Because when you level the playing field, you see that Titanic is only #6.

Update: Four freaking weeks at #1. Impressive. That hasn't happened since Fellowship of the Ring.

A Brief History of Venom in Cinema
Posted on 08.03.08 by Widge @ 8:58 pm
Venom Dog

To anyone expecting this to be a page about biting or stinging insects in movies, sorry, Dindrane. And to anyone thinking this is one of the myriad other films that have been titled "Venom," well, sorry again.

No, we're talking everybody's favorite black goo. Yes, even more popular than the black goo that gave us The Beverly Hillbillies, it's the alien symbiote known as Venom. Now that Sony actually appears to be trying to spin this off from Spider-Man into its own film, I thought it might be prudent to give you a quick rundown on how we got here. After all, the Venom project is the one that I consistently bring up at conventions to impress upon people that comic book publishers and movie studios don't always think things through. Because how do you create a movie about Venom in which Spider-Man cannot be mentioned at all?

(Sidebar: I used the Spi-Dog Venom image because all the Venom pics I could find were very boring.)

The Dark Knight (2008) - Movie Review
Posted on 08.03.08 by Widge @ 7:07 am
Dark Knight poster

Written by: Christopher Nolan & Jonathan Nolan, based on a story by David S. Goyer & Christopher Nolan, which was based in turn on characters created by Bob Kane
Directed by: Christopher Nolan
Starring: Christian Bale, Heath Ledger, Aaron Eckhart, Michael Caine, Morgan Freeman, Maggie Gyllenhaal, Gary Oldman

My Advice: Don't miss it.

Batman (Bale) has been doing a good job cleaning up the streets of Gotham. In fact, he may be doing too good a job. Or too bad a job, depending on how you look at it. The organized crime collective is getting backed into a corner. Not only do they have Batman after their asses, but a new DA, Harvey Dent (Eckhart), actually wants to clean things up. And of course, Jim Gordon (Oldman) and his crew are fighting the good fight as well. Seeing no other way to deal with the situation, they accept the assistance of a newcomer: The Joker (Ledger). Trouble is, they don't know what they've unleashed.
