12.11.08 by Widge @ 9:24 am I slept like hell. How are you? Yes, I know what you're thinking: that was Lee Dorsey. That's from a Jools Holland special from 1985. Categorized as: Music

12.10.08 by Widge @ 10:44 pm At one of the ukulele spectrum, there's the late Tiny Tim and his rendition of "Tiptoe Through the Tulips." At the other end is Jake Shimabukuro, who proceeds to throw down on the George Harrison/Beatles composition "While My Guitar Gently Weeps." It's not often that you will see "ukulele" and "throw down" appear together, at least on this site. But all I can say is Just Damn. If he hasn't already done this, a Zappa cover song retitled "My Ukulele Wants To Kill Your Mama" would be fine with me. Categorized as: Music

12.09.08 by Widge @ 9:24 pm I've never been really impressed with Metallica. Yeah, I know, I know--that whole Blew The One And Only Chance The Music Industry Had To Get Out In Front of the Internet Piracy Problem thing. But even before that: I remember going to Lollapalooza one year where they were headlining. I was there to see Rage Against the Machine. Metallica hit the stage, I hit the parking lot. Except for a few of their songs, they've never done anything for me. Except for the S&M symphony album, perhaps. I say this not to slag off Metallica--not that they haven't earned it (see above)--but to put you in mind of what it would take for me to frontpage them. I know you're thinking: must be zombies--and not just because the zed-word is in the title there. Yes, it's the music video for "All Nightmare Long," featuring the Soviets raining down alien spores from Tunguska on America in 1948. I'm wondering if they got the idea for that from what the Japanese intended to do before World War II came to an end: use their aircraft carrier subs to drop the Black Death on California. 12.07.08 by Widge @ 10:43 pm Tom Waits is fifty-nine years young today. But that doesn't matter a whit: the man is immortal and you and I both know it. If you're looking for choice Waitsian vids, I might point you to the two-part Waitsapalooza we did when he was first touring again. Part 1 is here, Part 2 is here. To celebrate, here's a gift for you: "Take Me Home," one of his two most wonderful short, romantic, sad short songs. The other being "Johnsburg, Illinois." Incidentally, Holly Cole does a tremendous cover of this. Categorized as: Music

12.06.08 by Widge @ 4:56 pm What would happen if you took every Harlequin-level romance novel that exists in the fantasy genre and fed it through a wood chipper aimed directly at the Hallmark Channel? The end result of your efforts would probably look a lot like "Shine On Me," the music video from Chris Dane Owens. Now before you watch this--I know my readers--the inclination will be to mock this. Because it's so unabashedly, well, mockable. But I put to you the following two things to bear in mind: 1. The production values are quite good. 2. It's still better than the Dungeons and Dragons movie. I leave you now with these two things: 1. Request: someone please do a "literal" version of this video. Please. (Example here.) 2. Chris Dane Owens is the anti-matter twin of Doc Hammer. Discuss. Categorized as: Music
