Gnarls Barkley Live in Boston: They Are the Champions
Posted on 08.23.06 by Widge @ 3:48 am

Berkeley Place was kind enough to post some tracks from the Gnarls Barkley live set in Boston on August 11th. As they state, not the best quality, but hey, you've always wanted to hear Cee-Lo sing a bit of Queen. You know it's true. If nothing else, the version of "Transformer" is worth the price of admission.

Update: It appears Berkeley Place has gone the way of all flesh. Shame.

"Weird Al" Yankovic's "Don't Download This Song": Even Lars Ulrich Knows it's Wrong
Posted on 08.23.06 by Widge @ 3:19 am

"Weird Al" Yankovic knows his stuff. "Don't Download This Song" is a perfect example of reverse psychology. And it's pretty funny to boot. It's, of course, all a crass marketing angle to promote his new album, Straight Outta Lynwood, which hits September 26. And are we going to fall for it and give you a link to his MySpace page where you can download the song?

Are you kidding? He's "Weird Al" Fucking Yankovic. I've been listening to him for as long as I can remember. Go now. Pre-order his album here.

Hammering a Hammered Dulcimer
Posted on 08.20.06 by Widge @ 3:55 pm

Yeah, I know--you're thinking to yourself for about the first minute and a half: "If I wanted Dead Can Dance, I'd just go pop in a CD, Widge, you time-wasting ass." Just wait.

And think--he's doing all of that with giant coffee stirrers from McDonald's. Just damn.

Dude's got a website here.

Care Bears on Fire: I Bet You Think This Song is About You, Mom
Posted on 08.19.06 by Widge @ 2:32 pm

The Phoenix points us to this very amusing article in New York Magazine, regarding the punk band Care Bears on Fire. The catch? The oldest member is eleven. "See? Eleven. Right across the board." The other catch is they're doing this under their parents' coaching and with their parents' permission. What's hilarious is when, as the article relates, what rebelliousness and punk ethic there is rears its head. Like the mother's reaction when she finds out the song "Watchdog" is about her. Priceless.

I would love to hear some of their music. The name alone earns them points with me. Reminds me of a sketch I saw at San Diego one year, where Alex Ross had drawn a parody of his famous Marvels cover--except instead of the Human Torch it was Winnie the Pooh, on fire, screaming and falling out of the sky. Genius.

Tom Waits: Orphans: Brawlers, Bawlers and Bastards: And All the Sinners Know What He's Talking About
Posted on 08.18.06 by Widge @ 5:20 pm

Tom Fucking Waits

Wassonii's MOG pointed the way to this excellent news for a Friday: three-disc set from Tom Waits hits in November. Rare stuff. Never-before-heard stuff. Oh yeah, we're in. From the Anti release:

"Brawlers" is chock full of raucous blues and full-throated juke joint stomp, "Bawlers" contains Celtic and country ballads, waltzes, lullabies, piano and classic lyrical Waits' songs, while "Bastards" is filled with experimental music and strange tales.

Sold. Find the track list on the Anti site here.
