08.14.08 by Widge @ 12:15 am Here's a bit from TED, one of the most entertaining and yet brainy timesucks on the Web, where Pamelia Kurstin plays a few theremin numbers and also discussed the instrument. Nice. Direct link for the feedreaders. We'll send you back to Hack N Mod where we found this so you can see the Gnarls Barkley theremin cover video that we had mentioned previously. But here's also something we mentioned before: robots covering Gnarls Barkley using a theremin. More theremin stuff after the break. Categorized as: Music

08.07.08 by Rob Levy @ 9:31 pm Released by No Fun Records At first The Dials may appear a little pretty. They have that basic rock band look with four cats playing the crap out of their instruments. But upon further examination there is much more beneath the surface. The Dials bring a goulash of power punk, no wave and new wave and then fuse it with surf instrumental textures with riot girl sensibilities. Sonically crisp and lyrically smart the band can pretty much do what they please within the oeuvre of power pop music. And they do so with great bravado on their gutsy and gritty 2nd full length album, Amoeba Amore. "Antonio," is a snarling opener that mixes eye liner with fisticuffs as it thrashes about. The title track, "Amoeba Amore," is crunchy indie rock offering with terrific mixed harmonies from vocalists Rebecca Crawford and Emily Dennison. "3 Is Better Than 4" is a surfy ditty complete with nifty hand claps and grinding guitars. "Sharp Teeth" and "18" are two slices of fantastic bouncing girl pop. Prog rock keyboards kick start "Bloodsucker," a mid 80s sounding tale of love gone bad. There is a Breeders-like feel to "Happy After All" and "Joe Lies" which provides some balance to the tone of the album. Their take on Foreigner's "Urgent" stands out, adding a Devoesque flavor to the original by layering the song in keys and snappy percussion. Categorized as: Music and Reviews

07.27.08 by Widge @ 11:43 am ![]() You know, lots of bloggers and how-to-make-money business people hammer on the niche. Find a niche. Find yourself a good niche and then hunker down. Of course, to find a decent niche, you have to get creative. You don't want to think too broadly, because if you aim for too broad a niche you end up with...well, this site. But Pack Central out of Los Angeles has found an excellent niche for where to sell music: prisoners. And sadly in this country he's got a potential customer base of 2.3 million. And what can he sell to prisoners? Not CDs. Certainly not vinyl. No: cassettes. With the screws removed since they are small and metal and a no-no. But Bob Paris, the owner, has been stockpiling cassettes for about five years. His sales hit about $1 million a year. Categorized as: Music

07.05.08 by Widge @ 8:29 pm ![]() No, B-Naut's not in any sort of actual contest, but he is nonetheless. DJ B-Naut, for those of you just joining us is our not-so-tame resident turntablist, one of the key Needcoffee Irregulars. When we inflicted the Cow Song from Sesame Street onto audiences at our film fest, B-Naut took up the challenge and remixed the hell out of it, bitching over IM at me most of the way there. Now, B-Naut has been tapped to remix a song for Universal Records. And it's done. You can download it right now from Digital Eargasm. It's by Anything But Monday, and it's "Wild And Stupid (DJ B-Naut Sex, Cuts, and RockNRoll Remix)". Bear in mind that the song is shared via zShare and thus you may be greeted by pictures of scantily clad female bums. Anatomy bums, not women who want to squeegee your car windshield for a buck. Although if that's your thing, I'm sure you can find something on Google or Craigslist that will help you out. Anyway, potentially NSFW. And DE has auto-music playing that I can't figure out how to block. Regardless. Categorized as: Music
