05.01.08 by Widge @ 12:50 am Over at The Eyeball Kid, they provide a wealth of Waitsian knowledge. In addition to a ginormous list of who's covering Tom, they found this live video of Tracy Bonham covering "Earth Died Screaming." I am such a sucker for strings. Categorized as: Music

04.28.08 by Widge @ 2:46 pm An excellent bit from the Grammys in 1975. Ken sent this over and he and I are both fascinated by the graphics floating in. I wonder if anybody kept those giant floating heads. If somebody from the tech crew has a giant Roberta Flack head they kept all this time. Categorized as: Music

04.28.08 by Widge @ 6:25 am It might start out a little odd, but wait until the full orchestra comes in. Then it really begins to kick ass. Categorized as: Music

04.26.08 by Widge @ 5:44 pm ![]() Deborah Chesher took photos of rock musicians. Last year she published the book Everybody I Shot is Dead, which was going to be of serious interest to Siege until he heard the photography bit. Anyway, the book features photos of musicians we've lost as well as her stories. One of these stories has gotten reproduced on The Secret Vault. And it's a great one. While my guy is calling the other Sprint place to make sure they have the part, I overhear that last part of the other guy making a reservation... I wasn't paying much attention until, out of the corner of my ear, I heard him spell N-i-l-s-s-o-n and say it was for four.
I glanced at him and when he hung up the phone I made some smartass comment like, "So, I'm invited to dinner?" as the spelling of the name sunk in. How odd, I thought, as he joked back, "Sure, dinner's at 7:30." Then I mumbled, "You don't happen to know Harry. do you?" "Excuse me?" "Sorry, I just heard you spell Nilsson. Just wondered if you knew Harry." "I'M HIS SON." Oh, it gets weirder. Read the whole thing here. And go buy Deborah's book here. We're sending you straight to her site instead of Amazon because I'm sure she gets a bigger chunk of the $ that way. Tell her we said hi. Categorized as: Music

04.25.08 by Widge @ 2:15 am ![]() Tom Waits, actor and musical genius, gave a list of his "cherished albums of all time" to The Guardian. It's from 2005, but the list is brilliant and timeless. I don't know how we missed this before. Here's a brief snippet: his opinion of #15, Bill Hicks' Rant in E Minor. Bill Hicks, blowtorch, excavator, truthsayer and brain specialist, like a reverend waving a gun around. Pay attention to Rant in E Minor, it is a major work, as important as Lenny Bruce's. He will correct your vision. His life was cut short by cancer, though he did leave his tools here. Others will drive on the road he built. Long may his records rant even though he can't.
Amen, Brother Tom. Read the whole list here. Found via Utility Fog. Categorized as: Music
