Batman the Musical: We Are Not Amused
Posted on 07.09.06 by Widge @ 5:52 pm

Neat*Geek clues us in to one of the most terrifying MP3s you will download this week: a song from the Batman musical. I remember hearing about this long and long ago, but then nothing. I assumed it had gone into the Broadway development hell, wherever that is.

The song is apparently the Joker's big number from the show, "Wonderful Toys." Find it here.

"Stop him before he rhymes again." Yes. Please.

Superman Returns...to Your CD Player
Posted on 06.28.06 by Widge @ 11:18 pm

Well, while everybody who didn't get in line to see the film at a midnight showing is no doubt checking out the film even as I type this and you read it, if you dug it and you want some more of a spandex fix, then check it out: John Ottman does his best to channel John Williams in the soundtrack to the new film--and rightly so. It became very evident how much the new film leans on the old franchise to get your nostalgia rocks off when I saw the most recent television commercial: had absolutely no effect on me. Once it was over, I realized why: they had exchanged the Williams score for some progressive rock crap. It's the Williams score and the feelings it stirs in us--same thing with Star Wars. We're suckers, all of us, for Williams. So they were wise to prop up the film on his back, although it's a shame since I normally like Ottman's work when he's just being himself.

Also of note, if you're feeling in a mood for a tribute album, there's Sound of Superman, which features a mix of cover songs and original bits in praise of Kal-El. Honestly, I didn't recognize any of the bands on here except The Sun and Motion City Soundtrack. I'm just a little disappointed they couldn't get somebody like Marilyn Manson to cover "Can You Read My Mind?" You know you'd pay good money to hear that.

Both of these releases are from Rhino.

Stevie Wonder on Sesame Street: Brought to You by the Words "Bad" and "Ass"
Posted on 06.27.06 by Widge @ 9:51 am

This 1973 performance of "Superstition" by Stevie Wonder on Sesame Street was so wicked and badass that it is considered by some music scholars as a Wold Newton-level event. All of the children who appeared on set when this event occurred have gone on to illustrious musical careers after having been exposed to the Funk Gods themselves touching down on The Street. For example, the kid on the upper fire escape/balcony thing using her own head for a maraca is a young PJ Harvey.

The Muse Supermassive Contest!
Posted on 06.21.06 by Widge @ 12:01 am

Muse's new album, Black Holes & Revelations, drops on July11th here in the U.S. I can't freaking wait myself. And if you can't freaking wait either...

Well, you kinda have to. We can't help you with that.

What we can help you with, though, is some swag: we've got a copy of the CD signed by the band and some kickass iPod speakers by Logitech we're giving away. Want them? Win them. If you dare.

Go give the folks at Filter a big ol' bear hug for giving you the shot at such monumental swagness.

Corey Glover in Superstar: And Remember, He's Been Your Right Hand Man All Along
Posted on 06.12.06 by Widge @ 11:55 am

Corey Glover

Just got the e-mail: we were close. We cast him in Sweeney Todd. But now he's gotten himself the role of Judas in a tour of Jesus Christ Superstar.

Yes, Corey Glover is going to wail as Judas. That just made this Monday a lot easier to bear.

Check out the tour dates on his site for more info. Alas, the site is dead. Oh dear.

Everyone else is going to link to this. And you're going to be sick of seeing it. But do you know why everyone's going to link to it?

Because it's perfect. It's just flat out perfect. Watch and let the work week fall away from you.

Mike Patton Gets His Mojo with Peeping Tom: I Can't Believe He Did It Again

Peeping Tom CD cover art

Mike Patton, one of the vocalists I revere as a god, has a new project/album about to hit from his own Ipecac Records: Peeping Tom. The list of co-conspirators on this thing is formidable, to say the least: Kool Keith, Massive Attack, and Norah Jones (apparently saying "fuck," which has everybody all a-twitter...no idea) are just a few.

Check out the project info. Here's a slice:

This is my version of pop music. In a way, this is an exercise for me: taking all these things I've learned over the years and putting them into a pop format. I've worked with many people who have said to me, 'oh you have a pop record in you, eventually you'll find it,' and I always laughed at them. I guess I owe them an apology.

We're Your Source of Self-Destruction: Primus and Metallica's "Master of Puppets"
Posted on 05.11.06 by Widge @ 4:39 pm

Because Les Claypool secretly runs the one world government. Here he proves it by leading Primus in a rousing deconstruction of "Master of Puppets." If you don't already know why the two are connected then your clearance level just doesn't run high enough. Sorry.

If somebody has a full video of them utterly destroying Ministry's "Thieves," as I saw them do aeons ago at a Lollapalooza show, then I'll be that person's fiend for life.

Yahoo Serious, Is That You?
Posted on 05.10.06 by Widge @ 3:31 am

I can call him that because that's exactly what my hair looks like when I wake up in the morning. Of course, I usually wake up in the trunk of my car with it parked in a strange place and I don't remember what the hell I did the night before...but that's incidental.
