Here's yer DVD goodness...

TV DVD of the Week: Earth 2: The Complete Series. This Universal release contains all twenty-two episodes of the series across three discs. Earth has been ruined and can no longer support humans, probably due to a string of Deuce Bigalow sequels, and now a new planet must be found, since living in spacestations is making everyone sick. Me too, since I can't read in a moving car I'd probably have been screwed. Only bonus features are deleted scenes, outtakes, bloopers, and episodes of Cleopatra 2525 and Sliders. (Buy it)

DVD of the Week: The Truman Show. An improvement over the last version of this on DVD, this Paramount release features the most excellent Jim Carrey starrer and the moment I've been waiting for my entire life: to sail a ship straight up to the wall at the edge of the sky and poke a hole in it. So I'm a bit partial. Anyway, it sports a two-part making-of docu, four deleted/extended scenes, a photo gallery, and trailers and TV spots. (Buy it)

Weekend Recommendations: Books & CDs

Each weekend, Needcoffee.com's staff of whackos will wrack our brains to give you interesting and new things to do over the weekend. Books, movies, whatever. We'll throw them out, you do with them what you will. And hey...if you have something you want to recommend--whatever it is--drop us a line.

Incidentally, we've provided links where we can for you to buy the stuff or find out more if you're interested, courtesy of those Amazon types.

Hey, come on, we can't be totally selfless in this, can we? Okay, books and music first...

Book of the Week: Nerd Girl Rocks Paradise City: A True Story of Faking It in Hair Metal L.A. by Anne Thomas Soffee. Oh Lord, hair metal. Not much could make us want to revisit that dark period in culture. However, Soffee's memoir of trying to become a rock reporter and succumbing to the drugs and alcohol of the scene--then having to pull up out of it--is worth going forward without fear. And it's damn funny to boot. This hits from Chicago Review Press. (Buy it)

Audiobook of the Week: When We Were Orphans by Kazuo Ishiguro, performed by John Lee. Being told the story by a protagonist who may or not be a little wonky in the head, who was traumatized by the disappearance of his parents one after the other when he was a child. Now, decades later, he returns to Shanghai to try and find them and solve this great mystery of his life. This Harper Audio release gets the unabridged CD treatment courtesy of reader Lee. (Buy it)

Graphic Novel of the Week: The Silencers: Black Kiss by Fred Van Lente & Steve Ellis. Seldom are comic book villains featured. Or at least featured well. Whether it's the Joker's ongoing series or simply turning villains into good guys (Sabretooth, Juggernaut, Magneto about seventy-two times) because it's easier that way, it's just hard for the comic book companies to do. Waid and Kitson's Empire is the one that springs to mind. Enter this collection from Moonstone, in which a group of evil mob enforcers take center stage as they try to figure out what the hell is up when they suddenly find themselves being hunted down like dogs. Has some great moments in it and some delightfully evil bastards. Definitely worth picking up. (Head over to Moonstone's online store and buy it)

Comic Book of the Week: Fables #41 by Bill Willingham & Mark Buckingham. The end of the Homelands story arc featuring Boy Blue is here, and it's delightfully twisty and re-twisty in a way that doesn't make you feel contrived and cheap. It's hard to explain what the hell is going on without giving anything away but suffice to say I'll be fascinated to see where the title goes from here.

CD of the Week: Breakout by Soulive. I'll admit something to you: I had never heard of these guys before. I stumbled across them when I read that Needcoffee fave and Living Colour front man Corey Glover was providing vocals for a track. But I've heard of them now. This is pretty much a groove fest from start to finish, the kind of thing you can either put on as perfect background for working music or actively listen to. There's few things that disappoint, for example I thought "Crosstown Traffic" took a while to get up to speed. But mostly, it's smooth and tight with some great surprises, like Corey doing some low-end vocal acrobatics for once in "Freedom." And "What Can You Do" with Reggie Watts is the stand-out of the album--a song is so smooth it's positively frictionless. This hit this past week from Concord Records. (Buy it)

Postcards of the Week: Super Heroes: The DC Comics Universe of Alex Ross. Chronicle Books has released this collection of some of Ross' most potent work on the DCU, all done up in a book of postcards so you can buy it and marvel at it, since...does anybody use the postal service anymore? Anyway, these images are from all over Ross' work, including his posters, Kingdom Come, JLA: Liberty and Justice and others. Comes with thirty cards. (Buy it)

Here's yer DVD goodness...

TV DVD of the Week: Dr. Quinn, Medicine Woman: The Complete Season Six. Well, for anybody who's a fan of the show or been racking up these massive A&E Home Video boxed sets (oh, to have had slimlines), here's the final season. All twenty-two episodes are here across six discs. There's one audio commentary that comes on the "Point Blank" episode with star Jane Seymour and director James Keach. You've also got cast bios. Beyond that, there's guest stars to look for, such as Richard Roundtree, Willie Nelson, and Zach Galligan. (Buy it)

DVD of the Week: The Blues Brothers. This 25th anniversary DVD from Universal is a nice one. You can never have too much of this film. You get a slew of interviews and behind the scenes stuff along with some new footage, a memorial piece for John Belushi, and a whole bunch of stuff that covers the sequels and other spinoffs, like the Blues Brothers live show. But beyond House of Blues, you probably don't give a damn. Still, no commentary, but we'll take whatever we can get. Maybe in five years. (Buy it)

Book of the Week: The Art of Batman Begins by Mark Cotta Vaz. If you dug the movie like we did, then you'll probably be interested in checking out an absolute crapload of photos, concept art, bits on the history of the character, segments on costume and set design, storyboards, evolution of the Batmobile, and on and on and on. This Chronicle release takes you through everything, including some sweet interviews with folks from behind the scenes. And hey, folks! No nipples or neon! Again, rejoice and hug your families. Here's yer DVD goodness...

TV DVD of the Week: The Daily Show With Jon Stewart: Indecision 2004. For anybody who thinks that this show provides some of the best news on television, which it does, this Paramount/Comedy Central release is going to be a must-watch. Three discs take you through the best of their 2004 election coverage, including coverage of the conventions, the debates, commentaries and an intro by Stewart himself. Nicely done. (Buy it)

DVD of the Week: Downfall. We've been a fan of Bruno Ganz since Wings of Desire. And here he's taking on the role of Adolf Hitler (in his final days in the bunker in Berlin) and just turning in an amazing performance. The problem with films about Hitler is that there's a tendency to lessen his humanity. But that just lessens the overall horror: the bastard was human. This Columbia-Tristar release was nominated for a foreign language Oscar and besides Ganz' incredible job, you've got a director's commentary and a making-of featurette. (Buy it)

Book of the Week: Hitchhiker: A Biography of Douglas Adams by M.J. Simpson. Still trying to get the taste of the recent movie out of your mouth? Simpson's biography of Adams should do the trick. Filled with interviews with people who knew the man, you get to read the background on Adams' notorious rep for missing deadlines, how the stories Adams told about himself might have been a weeee bit embellished, and offers a complete portrait of the mad genius. This release hits from Hodder & Stoughton with a revised and updated foreward by producer John Lloyd. (Buy it)

Here's yer DVD goodness...

TV DVD of the Week: Hercules: The Legendary Journeys: Season 6. These Anchor Bay boxed sets freaking drown you in extras. The final episodes of the series total eight, but there's five discs here just to hold all the bonus bits that they want to assail you with. You get audio commentaries with star Kevin Sorbo (among others), a monster/effects featurette, photo gallery, wrap party footage, alternate titles, interviews, and an entire slew of CD-ROM features (which takes up the entire fifth disc). Huge. The fan will go nuts, as well they should. (Buy it)

DVD of the Week: Coach Carter. Can you imagine having Sam Jackson as a teacher in high school? I don't think I have the third ball necessary to talk back to that man. Anyway, he's here and he's the reason this Paramount release rises above its been-there, done-that teacher-who-saves-the-children foundation. A decent sports movie which is meant to be inspiring, it's Sam that makes the thing worth renting. Comes with two featurettes and six deleted scenes, along with a music video, which the less we talk about the better. (Buy it)

Hey, come on, we can't be totally selfless in this, can we? Okay, books and music first...

Book of the Week: H.P. Lovecraft: Against the World, Against Life, by Michel Houellebecq. This fascinating essay on the life and works of Lovecraft hits English and these shore thanks to the folks at McSweeney's. Does Lovecraft really think humanity is a bit of used gum on the shoe of the cosmos? Doomed to be strung out for a few blocks before the shoe's owner (Cthulhu? No, he didn't have feet...screw it, run with the metaphor) wipes us all off on the curb of eternity? Or something? Houellebecq dissects the man's style and his outlook, not to mention his legacy, and does it with style and force. I love it. Stephen King is on board for a freaking excellent intro, and two Lovecraft stories are included for good measure. If you dig Howard Phillips, you must own this. (Buy it)

Here's yer DVD goodness...

TV DVD of the Week: The League of Gentlemen. Tobias' description which we've mentioned before is all the more apt after we've had a chance to sit down and watch this madness: "what would happen if Stephen King and Ray Bradbury collaborated on a sketch comedy show." And the show is just so terribly mad, there's no other way to put it. This BBC boxed set has the whole shebang (all three series and the Christmas special), plus audio commentaries, docus, character bios, deleted scenes, interviews, outtakes, and more. God bless the Brits for their ability to kick TV's ass. (Buy it)

DVD of the Week: Casino. Martin Scorsese brings DeNiro and the gang to Vegas to provide a three-hour tour of the place's history through the story of a fictionalized mobster. This Universal release is for the film's tenth anniversary, and while we have no commentary, there is goodness to be had: deleted scenes, a featurette, a focus on Nicholas Pleggi (who authored the book the film is based on), a four-part look at the film, and brief time spent with Scorsese, Pleggi, and actress Sharon Stone. (Buy it)

Book of the Week: The Campfire Collection: Thrilling, Chilling Tales of Alien Encounters, edited by Gina Hyams. If you're seeking out some freaky stories to read around a campfire, then Chronicle's Campfire Collection is exactly what you're looking for. This time around they're talking about extraterrestrial shenanigans, which is never my first choice for freaking people out while camping, but whatever works and makes your stand on end, I guess. This collection comes with stuff like J.G. Ballard, Philip K. Dick and one of my favorite King stories, "I Am the Doorway." Nice. (Buy it)
