Okay, we skipped last week because I was traveling. But here you go.

Highlights from this week include the review of the drink I brought back, Rob's latest episode of The Curmudgeon, and the ongoing saga of the Lost Liberty Hotel.

In the Gabfest, some highpoints from this past week include: the mother of all spud guns, a space race, an orgami Enigma machine (not the band), the return (sorta) of Phil K. Dick, everyone ruining their pants over the King Kong trailer, a crazed guy who's doing a stuffed animal a day for a year, the game Doc wants even more than the head of Joel Schumacher on a pike, an unfortunate side effect of getting blasted with cosmic energy to get superpowers, an inspection of the cash necessary to be Batman, the continuing saga of the Global Frequency TV pilot, we try to figure out who unleashed the hemadrones, and...zombie dogs!

Over on One Tusk, like I said, I was supposedly on vacation, so check out my travel blog and laugh at my suffering.

Over on Red Nose, make sure you haven't missed our exploration of flag-burning amendment/law hacking, our new favorite explanation for the creation of the universe, how eBay can be used as a tool for revenge, and the latest on Tom Cruise's very public meltdown.

Okay, that's it. I'm tired now. Away with you.

The Hotel of Lost Liberty!
Posted on 06.28.05 by Widge @ 9:05 pm
Supreme Court Justice David H. Souter

Logan Darrow Clements is our hero. Why? Because he's started the process necessary, in the town of Weare, New Hampshire, of taking privately owned land from a homeowner and turning it into a hotel. This is because private property rights in America have just been turned on their head by the Supreme Court: all you have to do is prove that you can bring in more revenue for the local government than a homeowner (not hard to do), and bingo--eminent domain can kick in and you can kick the homeowner out!

Why in the world would we be in favor of this? Because Clements wants to build this:

The proposed development, called "The Lost Liberty Hotel" will feature the "Just Desserts Café" and include a museum, open to the public, featuring a permanent exhibit on the loss of freedom in America. Instead of a Gideon's Bible each guest will receive a free copy of Ayn Rand's novel "Atlas Shrugged."

And he wants to build it where Supreme Court Justice David H. Souter's home is now. Read the full press release here. We heartily endorse Clements and will probably invest capital in this endeavor when the time is right.

Found via Boing Boing and definitely worth the front page treatment. Spread the word.

Update: Thanks to Chuck Muth, we have addresses.

If you'd like to contact the Weare, New Hampshire board of selectmen to urge them to snatch Souter's home and move forward on "The Lost Liberty Hotel," see below:

Laura Buono, Chair Person

Leon Methot, Vice-Chair
lmethot@weare.nh.gov

Heleen Kurk
hkurk@weare.nh.gov

Joseph Fiala
jfiala@weare.nh.gov

Donna Osborne
dosborne@weare.nh.gov

I urge you to contact them and I also urge you to be courteous and sane when you do so. And use spell check--it's your friend.

Update: Here's mine:

To the honorable selectmen of Weare NH...

I will be perfectly honest and admit to you that I had never even heard of Weare before reading the press release regarding the proposed Lost Liberty Hotel at 34 Cilley Hill Road. Even if I had heard of Weare, I, again in all honesty, probably would not have considered your town as a possible destination for myself and my family to visit.

Now, I find myself very interested in Weare. If this Hotel goes forward, I would, with all seriousness, like to invest in its creation and would like to visit it once it is complete. And I know there are countless Americans across the country who feel the same way as I do. So this hotel is a perfect opportunity to increase cash flow for your town, as it will inevitably draw visitors and the dollars and taxes that visitors inevitably bring.

Therefore I respectfully ask that you give full consideration to Mr. Clements' proposal and urge you to vote yes for the commercial development of 34 Cilley Hill Road.

Thank you for your time.

Staggering towards another weekend we find ourselves, so that must mean it's time to screw with your Friday, hmmm? Okay.

First up, enter our Reno 911 Contest. More are coming, so don't get behind.

On our sister site, Red Nose Net, we've been following closely a few stories. Like the various salutes to George Lucas. And ongoing mockery of Tom Cruise's meltdown.

On the Gabfest side of things, there's the Esquire Declaration of Independence from oppressive wanks like the FCC. The return of Roger Waters to Pink Floyd, even for a single performance, spawning a musical end times Great Debate helmed by Tuffley. There's also the best use for chocolate we've seen in a while.

Beyond that, a new episode of Something Else is live.

Enjoy, you mad weasels.

Hell Yes.

Man...all I can say is that this presentation by Ben Hammersley that he delivered at Reboot in Copenhagen better get a transcript or an MP3 quickly--and it better be good. Because the presentation slides (which talk about etiquette, blogging and the Enlightenment--oh, yeah, and coffee, baby) were classic enough on their own. And right up our alley, as you can see on the right there. We are standing by.

Thanks to Boing Boing for the pointer.

We're late getting this out today, but we figure that after spending your morning in a slow build-up to wakefulness, you're trying to get a burst of productivity before the day is up. So, we're here to screw that up for you.

First up, ScottC's Cultural Apocalypse Clock has shambled back into your lives and you can go ahead and be afraid now in order to avoid the rush.

Over at our sister site, Red Nose Net, our favorite bits from this past week include the Dalek-napping, The Lonely Astronaut, a stunning rendition of "Straight Outta Compton," and the second episode of "My Wife, The Ghost."

Over on the Gabfest, we'd direct your attention to support your local DJ (B-Naut), Cardinal Fitts wants to talk seriously about modern life and media (and of course, I can't just take it seriously--sorry, chief), the online artshow called Monster Engine, an excellent article on what video games teach you, PETA promotes the use of long pig without considering that we're sick enough to take them up on it, and a bitchfest about the decision against medical marijuana.

There. Happy now? Have a good one.

P.S. Clock image is apparently a real clock, for sale here.
