07.12.09 by ScottC @ 10:01 pm You know that we are big fans of Black Phoenix Alchemy Labs. Who wouldn't love people who design a perfume based on Cthulhu. Well, they decided to give us a peak behind the curtain and gave us an exclusive sneak preview on some of their upcoming fragrances and special projects. ![]() Following on last year's success of the limited edition chapbook/scent pairing of The Neil's "Snow, Glass, Apples," Black Phoenix is doing the same with another of Gaiman's short stories: "Sunbird". Julie Dillon also returns to illustrate a tale of how far some will go in their passion for gastronomy. This will be premiering at San Diego Comic-Con along with another release based on Gaiman's story collection, Fragile Things. But you will have to wait to find out about that; Black Phoenix likes to leave you wanting more. As anyone who has read the story can guess, the scent consists of ...red sandalwood and patchouli, vanilla beans, lavender twigs and sage and cinnamon leaves, whole nutmegs, garlic bulbs, cloves, and rosemary.
After sampling the scent, it is quite heavenly. Spicy, but light enough to accent the flesh, not to burn. Categorized as: Stimuli

07.07.09 by ScottC @ 10:36 pm ![]() Innocent lawn ornament or something more ... The delightfully mad perfumers at Black Phoenix Alchemy Lab have used their skills to create scents inspired by Neil Gaiman's dark dreams, the black coal and bright metal of steampunk and the darker side of the longest night of the year. But this time they have tackled a subject that is far more unusual and strange. Kitsch. You know, snow globes, chia pets, commemorative plates, etc. All that mass produced, overly sentimental, artistic devoid plastic crap you get at souvenir shops and flea markets. At first, this seems an odd choice for Black Phoenix's Summer Garden series. You would expect something a little darker, more along the lines of Venus Fly Trap or Foxglove. Not Lawn Gnome, Plastic Pink Flamingo, and Spinning Multicolored Metallic Pinwheel. I'm not making this up. The scents reflect the bright summery attitude of the selections. Lawn Gnome mixes the sweetness of red currents and molasses with the earthiness of moss and patchouli. Plastic Pink Flamingo is all pink marshmallow peeps and dandelion. Spinning Multicolored Metallic Pinwheel has enough fruit scents for a fruit salad. It's all happy and cheerful and sunny. What the hell is Black Phoenix playing at? Categorized as: Stimuli

07.02.09 by Widge @ 6:22 pm I posted a year ago that the Creature From the Black Lagoon musical was coming this spring. And I even offered some swag to anybody who would review it. It's playing at Universal Studios Hollywood--but nobody's taken me up on the offer. I'm just saying. Anyway, if you've been wondering exactly what such a musical might look like, here's some footage that got posted thanks to Dread Central. Direct link for the feedreaders. On one hand, the Creature participating in a rawk love ballad is pretty funny. On the other hand, are they singing what I think they're singing? Wow. Categorized as: Stimuli

06.22.09 by Widge @ 2:11 pm That's right: don't be too proud of this dorktological terror you've constructed. Because it's time for another round of items that are friendly to those of us who find colors to be yesterday's news and agree that black is the new black. ![]()

06.20.09 by Widge @ 5:44 pm Friend to you and me, Prof. John Hodgman, was the entertainment speaker at the Radio & TV Correspondents' Dinner. He took the opportunity to explain the difference between nerds, geeks and jocks--and strives to place President Obama into one of those groups. Direct link for the feedreaders. Both Paul and Storm and Ken Plume make a case that perhaps Hodgman should be our current the Minister of Geek Affairs rather than Wil Wheaton. But, hey, I must say: the people elected Wheaton. So you know how that goes. Categorized as: Stimuli
