Contoured Coke bottle

Because some things you simply need to know. And why should you have no lives and read dozens of websites to know what's what? We're taking this one for the team.

  • Sacha Baron Cohen's Bruno is scheduled to hit cinemas on May 15th, 2009. I don't think we need to elaborate further with this crowd.
  • DC fired Chuck Dixon. What's up with that?

  • Coca-Cola is taking their contoured 20 oz. bottle and blowing it up. And not with Mentos or anything like that. They're going to take that shape and put it in its 2-liter form, replacing its current boring shape. All the Coke brands will soon follow suit. This pilot of the new bottle shape rolled out to Birmingham, Alabama and Chattanooga, Tennessee yesterday. Found via BevNET.
  • Sam Raimi will direct The Given Day, the as-yet-unpublished novel by Dennis Lehane, author of Mystic River and Gone Baby Gone. Apparently Martin Scorsese is finishing up on an adaptation of Lehane's Shutter Island starring Leonardo DiCaprio. The report at Variety mentions that Spider-Man 4 is being scribed by James Vanderbilt, although last I heard there's some question as to whether or not Raimi will return. If not, solve this equation: Peter Jackson is to Guillermo Del Toro what Sam Raimi is to...whom? Anyway, the book is due out September 23rd. Pre-order it here.

Stuff You Need to Know: Angels, Demons, Canadians & Damages
Posted on 06.16.08 by Widge @ 11:52 pm
    Moby Dick by Ray Bradbury

Because some things you simply need to know. But it's silly to make you read a whole post about each one. The only thing sillier is us writing an entire post about each one. Enjoy.

  • Amazon has a DVD sale that looks a lot like the old DVD sale, but they do have a bunch of stuff for 50% off if you didn't take advantage last time. Maybe they're trying to make up for all the God! Damn! Down! Time! Found via Dealhack.
  • The Animated Adventures of Bob & Doug McKenzie, which we've mentioned before, has Fox on board. 13 episodes are ordered for 2009 by Global Television. In addition to Dave Thomas and Rick Moranis reprising their roles, at least vocally, also in the cast are Dave Coulier (yes, from Full House), Colin Mochrie (Whose Line All-Star), Pat McKenna, Derek McGrath, Ron Pardo, Jayne Eastwood and Ho Chow.
  • Angels & Demons, the follow-up to The DaVinci Code, can't film in any of Rome's churches, according to Hollywood Reporter: "Traditionally, we read the script, but in this case that was not necessary," said Fr. Marco Fibbi, spokesman for the Diocese of Rome. "The name Dan Brown was enough." Funny, that's how we feel about his stuff, too. This, of course, the latest in a conspiracy whereby whenever Dan Brown is out of the news for six weeks or more, Rome does something to remind us he exists.
  • There's a Beowulf musical. Of course we're serious.

Astro Boy: Everyday (Plus a Feature Film) is Go (Again)
Posted on 06.16.08 by Widge @ 9:31 pm

    Astro Boy

I found the intro song to the 1980s iteration of the show, but the singers on it made me want to claw the eardrums from my head. So I think the original is safer. So let's begin our post with the opening theme. All of you anime fans can stand at attention or whatever it is you do.

    RIP: Harvey Korman
Posted on 05.30.08 by Widge @ 4:02 am

    Harvey Korman

Harvey Korman has passed away at age 81. Hedley Lamarr, Prof. Balls, the Count de Monet...so many excellent and funny as hell performances.

Some of my favorite Harvey Korman moments are when Tim Conway would absolutely break him on The Carol Burnett Show. And how hard Harvey would try to stay in character--and fail spectacularly. A good example is below--sadly, the best quality version I could find.

Thanks for everything, Harvey. Rest well.

Pratchett vs. Alzheimer's; Terry Comes Out Swinging
Posted on 03.14.08 by Widge @ 3:38 am
    Terry Pratchett and friend

Terry Pratchett yesterday announced that he's donating $1M to research for Alzheimer's. This after he was diagnosed in December with an early onset version of the disease.

He said, "Part of me lives in a world of new age remedies and science, and some of the science is a little like voodoo, but science was never an exact science, and personally I'd eat the arse out of a dead mole if it offered a fighting chance." He also said "I intend to scream and harangue while there is time."

I've personally lost two grandparents to Alzheimer's, so I feel for him. And I'm sure his carrying on will help the cause. So scream on, Brother Terry. We're right there with you.

In related news, the British Association for the Advancement of Dead Moles was quick to point out that there are no scientific studies linking them with Alzheimer's cures. They said this while remaining seated. And also dead.

Thankee to Rox, who sent us this.

EA to Take-Two: No More Mr. Nice-Megacorp
Posted on 03.13.08 by Doc @ 10:14 am
    Electronic Arts logo

EA's buyout offer to Take-Two has gone hostile. The software titans, having been rebuffed on a more congenial buyout offer, has gone with a straight offer to shareholders at $26/share...they're attempting to just buy controlling interest out via the open market. Despite the timing, this deal isn't just (or even mostly) about Take-Two/Rockstar's marquee Grand Theft Auto franchise, whose fourth (or sixth or eighth, depending on how you count 'em) installment is just around the corner. I suspect, as do others, that GTA is a smokescreen and a nice bonus from EA's perspective in this deal. The real juicy acquisition is T2's competing sports franchises. If EA sews up this deal, they will be the sole licensed purveyor of video games based on any and all professional and collegiate sports. So now all you basketball and hockey fans can come to know the agony that the football side of the house has struggled with since EA got cozy with the NFL. Further analysis after the jump.

Ask a Ninja to Create Hopefully Killer "Killer Tomatoes" Remake
Posted on 03.12.08 by Widge @ 10:17 pm
Ask a Ninja to remake "Killer Tomatoes"

Kent Nichols and Douglas Sarine, the people who brought you Ask a Ninja, have been tapped to remake the pinnacle of late 70s cinema, Attack of the Killer Tomatoes, which spawned a very unlikely film franchise. And an even more unlikely cartoon. They're apparently going to scribe it together with Nichols directing.

When asked about the opportunity to bring killer tomatoes to a new generation, Nichols stated, "'Attack of the Killer Tomatoes!' is the masterwork of a generation. We can only aspire to recapture that magic."

What I'm looking forward to is Daft Punk covering "Puberty Love" with the inevitable Paul Oakenfold remix.

    Sci-Fi Sainthood for Moorcock
Posted on 02.29.08 by Doc @ 11:24 am
Michael Moorcock, 2008 SFWA Grand Master

With a body of work that runs the gamut from the proto-cyberpunk Jerry Cornelius novels to the high fantasy melodrama of Elric to the madcap steampunk of the Nomad of the Time Stream, Michael Moorcock's writing chops have never been in doubt for fans of sci-fi/fantasy fiction. His more "mainstream" novels (and I use the term exceedingly loosely), like Behold the Man, Gloriana or Mother London, have received stellar reviews outside the sometimes cloistered confines of genre fiction (though my own thoughts on his more "serious" efforts run counter to the larger book-reviewing world). This April, at the Nebula Awards, he will join the hallowed ranks of the SFWA Grand Masters as the 25th member of that exclusive club.

Brief Bond 22 Update: "Quantum of Solace"?
Posted on 01.24.08 by Widge @ 12:40 pm
For Your Eyes Only book cover art

Coming on the heels of our last post about the film, at least we have a title now: Quantum of Solace. Now I know you're probably thinking the same thing I am: "Wasn't that the name of the last Enigma album?"

But no, it actually was a short story by Ian Fleming that appeared in the For Your Eyes Only collection. And if you check out the plot on Wikipedia, it's probably safe to say that a lot of the story is going to be shunted. Which begs the question...why use the title?

I had to look it up to see if it was a prank, even though it was listed in Variety. Maybe this is a Blue Harvest to get people to quit asking about the title? I don't know. It just...is an interesting choice. Let's leave it at that.

    Update: Logo revealed...see it below.
